Amara’s Law and the Exponential Growth in Data Center Power Demand With new technology, we often fall into the trap of Amara’s Law: “We tend to overestimate the effect of technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.” As data centers rapidly expand to meet the growing demand for AI, cloud computing, and digital transformation, are we falling into the same pattern? ?Short-Term Overestimations: We hear wild predictions about the immediate need for massive power supply to data centers. But historically, these have been exaggerated, with slower adoption curves than forecasted. Are we overbuilding and overspending based on short-term projections? ?Long-Term Underestimations: However, as new technologies like quantum computing, 6G networks, and AI-driven applications enter the mainstream, we may be underestimating the long-term strain on power grids. What happens when data consumption doubles again…and again? As natural gas infrastructure and developers, we’re focused on solving this equation and enabling onsite generation. It’s not just about meeting today’s demand—it’s about anticipating the future, creating scalable, flexible solutions that won’t leave data centers in the dark 10 years from now.
