In 1917, Agnes and H.C. Greer recognized a need for high-quality cold rolled strip steel. Their solution: build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and produce the best quality strip available. From there, the Greer Steel Company grew into one of the most respected producers of cold rolled strip steel in the U.S. Greer Steel's immersion into our customers' businesses creates the type of relationship that is rare these days. Back when the Greers started this company, they built it one customer at a time. By paying attention to the details and listening to their customers’ needs, they built true relationships. Today, Greer Steel not only remains a leader in cold rolled strip quality but is an extraordinary resource for products and services that provide you with more efficient production, more satisfied customers, and more profit.

See what our expert had to say this week about the current state of the steel market: - Jason Miller, Sr. Director - Purchasing/Cost Planning. I am not even sure where to start; the surprise announcement of tariffs, once again this week, has done wonders for pricing.?Just as tariff fears eased coming out of last week, buyers were growing comfortable with prices trending up because scrap prices were rising; enter the chaos.?Scrap prices arguably rose more than mills expected, with primes up $50 in most areas. Then, all the panic on tariffs returned, and every country was back in the fold.?So, a $800/ton hot roll coil was a target coming into the week; now, I am not even sure if anyone is still willing to sell at a price that low.?The issue is that lead times have jumped out. Almost everyone is into April, and I am not sure anyone has put an April spot price out or opened their order book for a spot just yet.?The next issue you run into when you get in that time frame is the old seasonal planned maintenance, which always seems to come at the best times.?In the near term, expect some uncertainty, limited availability, and sticker shock, depending on who you deal with. We all have the same concerns right now…. Thanks for the insight, SMU!
?? It's Tuesday evening, which means SMU's latest #sheet and #plate prices are out. Remember all those boring markets we had last fall? This is not one of them. ?? Some buyers are already hitting the "panic" button. Because the question is no longer whether prices will rise. Instead, it's how fast, how high, and for how long. (We've also got some concerns about availability creeping in.) ?? It's not just a stricter Trump 2.0 tariff regime that's sending prices higher. So too are more day-to-day things like spring maintenance outages at mills. ? How high do you think we'll go? And where does it stop? Hot band at $900/ton, a grand - more? (And, just as important, is there enough demand to make this sustainable? Or is it another of those price spikes the US is sort of notorious for?) https://lnkd.in/erkCPvjs

FUN FACT: Over 150 million tons of steel rebar are used each year in construction. That's enough to circle the Earth about 4 times! Source: World Steel Association (worldsteel)

Lüders bands are localized bands of plastic deformation that appear in some metals, particularly in low-carbon steels and certain aluminum-magnesium alloys, when subjected to tensile stress. The phenomenon was first observed and described by Guillaume Piobert and W. Lüders. 1. Formation and Characteristics: a. Microstructural and Macroscopic Influence: The formation of Lüders bands is influenced by both the microscopic characteristics like grain size and crystal structure, and the macroscopic geometry of the material. For instance, a steel bar with a square cross-section tends to develop more Lüders bands than one with a circular cross-section. b. Yield Point Phenomenon: Lüders bands are associated with a yield point elongation where there's a sudden drop in stress after reaching the upper yield point, followed by a plateau in the stress-strain curve as the band propagates. This indicates the transition from elastic to plastic deformation. c. Propagation: The band typically starts at one end of a specimen and moves towards the other, with the front of the band often at an angle of 50-55 degrees to the specimen axis. Once the band has traveled through the entire specimen, uniform deformation resumes with positive strain hardening. 2. Experimental Observations: a. Stress-Strain Behavior: During tensile testing, the initiation of a Lüders band is marked by a yield point, followed by a drop in stress level where the band starts to propagate. This results in a serrated or noisy pattern in the stress-strain curve until the band crosses the entire length of the specimen. b. Material Instability: Lüders bands can lead to strain softening instabilities, where the deformation is not uniform, leading to potential issues in metal forming processes like deep drawing, where they might cause surface defects or aesthetic issues. 3. Practical Implications: a. In Metal Forming: In industries like automotive manufacturing, where sheet metals are used, the presence of Lüders bands can lead to undesirable surface features like stretcher-strain marks, potentially affecting product quality. To prevent this, materials might be pre-strained or cold rolled. b. Research and Mitigation: Studies have been conducted to understand and mitigate the effects of Lüders bands, especially in stainless steel cold rolling processes, where they can affect surface quality. Techniques like adjusting rolling parameters or material pre-treatment are explored to control or eliminate these bands. #metallurgy
