?? New Research on Importance of Insect Resistance Management (IRM) for RNAi-based Bioinsecticides A recently published paper in Insect Molecular Biology by authors including our own Ken Narva and Sean Whipple, Ph.D., MBA reviews the current state of RNA interference (RNAi)-based insecticides and proposes best practices for insect resistance management (IRM). RNAi insecticides are a novel class of biopesticides that target essential genes in insect pests, offering an environmentally friendly option for farmers. The paper highlights the different IRM strategies needed for RNAi products, depending on whether they are delivered as traits in transgenic crops or as sprayable formulations. For sprayable RNAi insecticides, like GreenLight Bio's Calantha?, the authors recommend rotating applications with insecticides from different IRAC mode of action groups to avoid resistance development in Colorado potato beetle. Proactive IRM strategies will help preserve the long-term efficacy of our RNAi-based insecticides and maintain their place as a sustainable component of integrated pest management. GreenLight Biosciences is committed to the responsible development and stewardship of our products. We believe that sustainable agriculture relies on innovative solutions and we are dedicated to providing growers with the tools and knowledge they need to protect their crops, while preserving biodiversity and promoting a healthy environment. ?? GreenLight Biosciences is proud to announce a €35 million financing agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB)! This milestone supports our efforts to create biological based products for a more sustainable future of agriculture in Europe driven out of our agricultural research station in Sevilla, Spain. ???? ? Over recent years, we've worked closely with policymakers, farmers, and investors to tackle the challenges facing our food system. This new EIB commitment supports research, registration, and commercialization of a pipeline of ten ribonucleic acid based biocontrols and other novel prodicts to be launched in the EU for plant health and bee health. It is an important step towards bringing sustainable alternatives to chemical pesticides to market, with benefits for farmers and biodiversity alike. The loan will also finance our research and innovation center in Sevilla, Spain. ? Amid economic pressures, climate change, and growing resistance to conventional tools, closing the innovation gap is crucial. Our commitment to agricultural innovation is driven by the need to future-proof rural communities and provide farmers with the tools and technology they need to protect crops more effectively. By offering farmers a next-generation solution to urgent problems today, we can promote healthier, more sustainable outcomes for generations to come. ?????????? ? GreenLight Biosciences is excited about the opportunities ahead and supporting initiatives that drive progress in agricultural innovation. ???? ?? Earlier this month, the Apiary Inspectors of America and their collaborators released preliminary data showing near record honey bee losses in 2023-2024. Adam Pachl, our North American Technical Lead for Bee Health (and former apiary inspector himself!), shared his reaction: "This is absolutely heartbreaking for all beekeepers.?It means that nearly two out of every five colonies died over the winter, and over half the colonies in the country died over the year.?These are national averages, and there are breakdowns that can be done with commercial/sideline vs. hobbyist and on the state-by-state level, but no matter how you look at it the losses are massive.?The yearly losses are the worst on record, and the winter losses are the 3rdworst, but only missing the worst on record by 0.4%.?That is astounding, and to me, unacceptable." RNA based pesticides enter the field: ?? Science Magazine announced their 2024 Breakthrough of the year and Calantha's use of RNAi for agriculture is a runner-up! ?? It's rewarding for this great technology to be listed alongside NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's JWST observatory and the discovery of altermagnets. The launch of Calantha plus RNAi's specificity, safety profile and range of potential applications helped garner the recognition. We are proud to be leaders in stewarding this game changing technology. For more information, click on the link below.
Science’s 2024 Breakthrough of the Year is lenacapavir, an injectable drug that demonstrated remarkable success at preventing HIV infection with one shot every 6 months. The drug attaches to the lattice-like capsid proteins that shield the virus’s genetic material—a mechanism that could inspire other antivirals.
