This innovative container uses R290 (propane) refrigerant, a low-impact solution that boasts an incredibly ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP). With improved insulation and optimised machinery design, the Greener Reefer offers an efficient, climate and environmentally -friendly alternative to traditional systems. The Greener Reefer Transition Alliance, which emerged from our project Greener Reefer in cooperation with the Kuehne Climate Center, recently came together in Hamburg to accelerate the transition to more sustainable refrigerated shipping. ??? Innovation is Thriving The sector is alive with cutting-edge advancements, particularly in: #Telematics & #Sensors: Enabling smarter, more efficient, and transparent supply chains. The rise of IoT solutions for enhanced cargo monitoring and logistics optimization. ?? Sustainability is key Sustainability continues to drive change in the industry, with inspiring innovations: AELER: Introducing new insulation materials for better energy efficiency. Daikin: Launching CO2 reefer units to reduce environmental impact. Thermo King Global Marine: Tackling food loss through innovative technologies. Carrier Transicold: Cutting reefer energy consumption of reefers. ?? The Chicken-Egg Challenge While the shipping industry is committed to meeting #IMO decarbonization goals, challenges remain: - Limited adoption of climate-friendly refrigerants like #propane (R290) due to gaps in public understanding of risks and safety requirements and a lack of public knowledge. ?? What’s Next? The good news is that steps are already underway to address these challenges. The Greener Reefers Project, funded by IKI and part of Green Cooling by Proklima, is: - Collaborating with training centers in #CostaRica and #SouthAfrica to enhance the skills of current and young reefer technicians to maintain and service reefers with hydrocarbons. - Building on the long-standing expertise of Proklima, which has already trained over 600,000 technicians worldwide in R290 systems. By 2025, this initiative aims to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable reefer industry—and skilled technicians who can drive the change. ??
