On August 2, 2024, U.S. natural gas-fired power plants generated over 7 million megawatthours (MWh) of electricity, which accounted for nearly half of all electricity produced in the contiguous United States that day. This was a 6.8% increase over the previous summer’s record set on July 28, 2023. The summer of 2024 saw nine out of the ten highest days of natural gas-fired electricity generation on record, with six occurring in August. Overall electricity generation for the summer of 2024 rose 3% compared to 2023, with natural gas-fired generation averaging 5.9 million MWh per day, a 3% increase. The increase was driven by hotter weather, low natural gas prices, new combined-cycle capacity, and higher generator capacity factors. The U.S. electricity generation mix has been shifting toward more renewables and natural gas while decreasing reliance on coal. Since 2014, the share of summer electricity generation from natural gas has risen from 29% to 45% in 2024, reflecting natural gas’s role in balancing the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like wind and solar. https://lnkd.in/gm9NUqUe #naturalgas #gasfired #powerplants #EIA #energyupdates #greenco
