Growing up on the Green Chimneys campus, Don Ross never imagined his childhood home would become a world-renowned center for human-animal interaction. Now, as the recipient of the inaugural 2025 Leadership in Service Award, Don's connection has come full circle. Since joining our board in 2013, his tireless advocacy has generated millions in support—a legacy rivaled only by his father's. "I've witnessed how animals as teachers and therapists have transformed thousands of lives," Don reflects. Join us in celebration on May 8th in Tarrytown at the Green Chimneys Spring Gala! The annual gala raises funds for innovative education and nature-based programs and therapies for children with special needs as well as for the care of our animal partners. www.greenchimneys.org/gala

Meet Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather! These three sisters were born at the end of December and eagerly awaited by students in the Teaching Barn Classroom. “Rats make wonderful companions because they interact and explore so eagerly. We see that some students feel more comfortable connecting with smaller animals,” shares Danielle Zalewski, Livestock Program Manager. “Plus, students probably won’t keep a goat or cow as a pet, but might adopt a guinea pig or rat. We teach students how to care for them and what responsibilities come with small animal ownership.” Learn how students connect with small mammals at Green Chimneys: https://lnkd.in/eEycx2EC

Green Chimneys' Annual Classroom Presentations showcase our students' amazing potential! Kids choose topics they're interested to learn more about, whether it's the NYC subway system or tarantula biology, and develop important research skills. Plus after their presentation, they'll get real feedback from teachers and staff judges, building important face-to-face communication abilities and genuine confidence. https://lnkd.in/eAhtA5vb

It’s maple tapping season at Boni-Bel Farm and Green Chimneys students are hands-on with this sweet tradition! Before each tap, they test the tree diameter (with a hug) to make sure it’s large enough and ensure our Sugar Maples stay healthy year after year. Then it’s drilling time, inserting the spile, and hanging the collection bucket. Daily sap collection is underway – with warmer days and freezing nights – it’s the right time of year and buckets full up fast. The students were amazed to learn it takes 40 gallons of sap to produce just one gallon of pure maple syrup! From tree to table, our small-batch syrup project is teaching sustainable harvesting with a sweet twist!

Green Chimneys is still working hard to prevent the spread of Avian Flu to our resident birds, and you can support us by donating to our Avian Flu Emergency Appeal. https://lnkd.in/eQFuXsGj If we can turn our large waterfowl pond into an enclosed aviary, our Farm & Wildlife Center staff can protect resident birds by excluding wild and migratory birds from the area. This is a necessary and major construction project that will cost approximately $50,000—a cost that was unanticipated for this year. A massive undertaking like this is only possible with your support!
