Over the weekend, more than 100 individuals showed their support for local servicepeople at the "Veteran's Day at McKay" 5k and 10k race, hosted on Green Diamond's California Timberlands in Eureka, Calif. Racers enjoyed running under the redwoods and even caught a glimpse of our early-stage stream restoration project on Ryan Creek, designed to improve fish habitat. This month, Green Diamond Resource Company, U.S. Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Humboldt Bay, and CALFIRE Humboldt-Del Norte Unit partnered to maintain and preserve the crash site of the 1964 USCG Rescue Helicopter 1363, known as HH-52. On December 22, 1964, during the historic storm that flooded much of Humboldt County, the HH-52 crew was deployed to rescue trapped residents. After several successful rescues, their vision was obscured, and the HH-52 crashed in the forest near Crannell. Tragically, two USCG personnel, a member of the Royal Canadian Navy, and four civilians perished in the crash. Remnants of the helicopter remain on Green Diamond’s timberlands and are forever memorialized and protected in memory of the lives lost, and the lives saved, that day. Thank you to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and U.S. Coast Guard crews who continue to honor this memorial.
