Today, the state of our environment is a household issue: global warming is in the news every day, students across the country are rallying to green their campuses, celebrities are speaking out for a host of causes, and schoolchildren are asking why the adults have let these things happen. This increased visibility and cultural awareness creates an enormous opportunity for environmentalists; it’s our best chance t to engage the public to push for solutions. Green Corps’ Field School for Environmental Organizing trains college graduates to run environmental campaigns, starting by building a core group of activists and finishing by convincing decision-makers to pass laws, change policies and create reforms to protect our environment. But Green Corps is more than a school – it’s a real-world endeavor. Trainees start working on campaigns from the start of their training. They make a difference, starting on Day 1. Green Corps' one-year, full-time, paid Field School for Environmental Organizing includes intensive classroom training, hands-on field experience running urgent environmental and public health campaigns, and career placement in positions with leading environmental groups. We teamed up with Air Alliance Houston for a cleanup of Sylvan Beach in La Porte. Unfortunately our volunteers found thousands of tiny plastic pellets on the beach. These pellets are a major source of microplastics in the ocean, threatening wildlife and our health. We need the plastics companies to stop spilling or dumping these pellets into our waters!

It was a privilege to testify at the Houston City Council meeting, advocating for the city to end its partnership with ExxonMobil’s misleading “Chemical Recycling” program. Chemical recycling is not the way forward—it is a distraction from creating real solutions and addressing the root of the plastic crisis. Proud to stand with Air Alliance Houston, the Coalition for Environment, Equity and Resilience, and the Advocates of Galena Park as we continue pushing for genuine environmental progress.

Last week, I held my first press conference as the Climate and Clean Energy Associate with PennEnvironment. We released our annual “Renewables on the Rise” report at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg, where we announced that Pennsylvania ranks 48th in the nation for growth in renewable energy production over the past 10 years. This is only a slight improvement from our ranking of 50th last year. Unless Pennsylvania state leaders change course, the Keystone State will fall behind in a nation that is being powered more and more by renewable energy – thus missing out on critical climate and economic opportunities. I will continue to urge the PA General Assembly to pass climate-smart legislation to protect our citizens and our environment. I was honored to be joined by three wonderful speakers: Natasha Fackler, the Infrastructure Implementation Coordinator for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT); Borough Of Carlisle Deputy Mayor Brenda Landis; and Alyssa Wingenfield, PE, the Vice President of Sales & Marketing at the McClure Company. Environmental Organizer | Climate Advocacy | Green Corps Alum | Microplastics Research
As fall is in full swing, I wanted to share an update from this past summer! After working to protect the Okefenokee Swamp from a proposed titanium mining operation and educating the public about the Inflation Reduction Act in Atlanta, I headed to my final Green Corps placement. This summer, I was part of the directing team at the Oakland, CA office with Fund for the Public Interest. My work focused on expanding Marine Protected Areas with Environment California and banning plastic bags with CALPIRG (California Public Interest Research Group) through citizen outreach and fundraising efforts. To continue the work to expand Marine Protected Areas and ban plastic bags, we engaged and educated 33,000 people through face-to-face conversations, and collected over 11,000 petitions. Our Oakland office raised over $470,000! A highlight this summer was when legislation passed to ban plastic bags! California was the first state to ban plastic grocery bags in 2014, but a loophole allowed thicker plastic bags to be sold as “reusable.” In 2021, the state threw out 230,000 tons of plastic bags, reversing the progress of the original ban. Building on efforts from the spring, we spent the summer gathering public support through our canvass office and had the opportunity to talk to and deliver our campaign product to elected officials. A couple of weeks ago, Governor Newsom signed SB1053 into law—banning plastic grocery store bags and closing the loophole! Thank you to everyone I had the chance to learn from and work with throughout last spring and summer. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to make an impact with such passionate people and excited to see what’s next! We’re halfway through the Houston/Baytown Clean Air Campaign, and the progress has been nothing short of inspiring! In just 6 weeks, we’ve exceeded our initial goal of 1,000 physical petitions and are quickly approaching 1,500. Along the way, we’ve mobilized over 100 passionate volunteers and secured 17 coalition sign-ons, including support from 7 local businesses in Baytown. And this is just the start! On a personal level, this experience has significantly enhanced my organizing skills and deepened my passion for environmental work. I’ve grown as a leader, honing my skills in volunteer mobilization and campaign strategy, while gaining a much deeper understanding of what it takes to organize for environmental change. Special thanks to Luke Metzger for his invaluable mentorship—it has been exciting to lead a campaign under his guidance. Also, a huge appreciation to Air Alliance Houston and the many other environmental advocates and organizations that have stood by our initiative here in Houston. Your support has been crucial, and I’m excited to continue this work alongside you as we push forward. We’ve accomplished so much, but there’s more to do.
