Happy Farmer Friday! We sat down with Urban Farmer Educator Leila to hear about her experience working at Green City Growers. Leila is one of our year-round urban farmer educators who helps people across Greater Boston embrace a local food system. Her enthusiasm for plants and dedication to teaching inspire us daily! 3 Questions with Farmer Leila:? 1.Why did you decide to become an urban farmer educator? "The youth are the future! It’s an incredible privilege to work with young people on their educational journey and to empower them to feel more connected to the land they live on, the food they eat, and to feel part of the natural world." 2. What is your top garden tip? "Make sure you set your plants up for success and find a spot for your garden or indoor pots that provides them with the sunlight, space, and access to water they need! It will make growing a fruitful harvest easier in the long run." 3. What are some of the best things you've heard while engaging people in the garden? "From a 2nd grader after noticing the radishes they planted earlier had just sprouted their first leaves, “the leaves are shaped like hearts because they loved that we planted them!” I love anytime the students feel proud of themselves and experience the joy, magic, and wonder of the garden!" Thank you Leila! We are so proud to have her as a year-round urban farmer educator. Our team of urban farmer educators are key in imparting valuable knowledge that connects individuals to food, sustainability, and the world.??

Residents at The Kensington in Boston's Chinatown get access to fresh lettuce and herbs! We recently installed a Grobrix hydroponic unit at The Kensington - an award-winning multi-family residential building. The residents join one of our urban farmer educators at monthly harvest events where they get to learn about growing food sustainably and take home the produce. It’s been great seeing how excited the residents have been about cooking in their kitchens with hyper-local produce. Growing food indoors rejuvenates the body and mind and also introduces people to the practice of hydroponics - a soilless, water-efficient, year-round method of food production. Ultimately fostering a deeper connection with themselves, their neighbors, and the world around them. ?? We’re so excited to continue to grow with The Kensington! #urbanfarming #hydroponics #GreenCityGrowers #community #sustainability #wellness #urbanagriculture

2024 was an incredible year for the team at Green City Growers. First, we are so grateful to our partners and friends who have shown continued support for our mission and purpose. In 2024, we rolled up our sleeves and achieved a 104% growth in total pounds of produce grown and a 42% increase in total engagements. With this growth, not only have we been able to enrich access to healthy food options, but we’ve also been able to increase the number of dependable and rewarding farming careers offered at Green City Growers. Thank you for being part of this journey with us—we can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish together as we look ahead to 2025! . . . #urbanfarming #urbanfarm
