GCIP is one year old! ?? In just 12 months we’ve started or completed 36 projects in 52 cities across 20 countries throughout Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. We’ve also assembled a fantastic team of hundreds of professionals who are working with municipal and national governments to secure sustainable finance and create resilient infrastructure. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far – but we also know there’s plenty more work to be done as GCIP enters its second year. 关于我们
GCIP is a demand-driven programme supporting sustainable green cities and climate-resilient infrastructure in lower-income countries. As the flagship programme of the UK's Green Cities and Infrastructure Centre of Expertise, GCIP supports UK Government objectives by accelerating investment in, and delivery of, growth-enabling infrastructure and urban development that is responsible, reliable, inclusive, low carbon and climate-resilient. GCIP aims to achieve this by addressing five key barriers: ? a lack of prepared, high quality, financeable infrastructure projects; ? poor infrastructure governance, weak regulatory structures and policy frameworks; ? limited fiscal autonomy and poor financial management in cities; ? a lack of effective urban planning and land use; and ? limited capacity to support green, inclusive and resilient growth. GCIP is managed by a PwC-led Alliance, including Mott MacDonald, Adam Smith International, Engineers Against Poverty and MDY Legal.

It pays to invest in gender equality, disability and social inclusion – literally. Studies show that more companies with initiatives to increase gender diversity and employ disabled people can enjoy profit increases as high as 28% ?? This is just one of the reasons why GCIP’s Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Capability Team recently designed a set of criteria to integrate GEDSI into infrastructure project development. The criteria, which will be piloted in Mozambique and Ghana, will help infrastructure project developers and sponsors create inclusive, accessible infrastructure for all. Did you know? Poorly managed food waste in cities is not only unsanitary and unsightly, but a potentially significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. A team from GCIP recently studied fruit and vegetable markets in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where there is little formal provision for the collection, treatment or disposal of food waste. As uncollected waste biodegrades, it generates methane – a powerful greenhouse gas which contributes significantly to climate change. The team also found that unsanitary conditions may prevent vulnerable groups from buying food. ?? Infrastructure project development and investment offer a fantastic opportunity to benefit women, disabled people and local communities. That’s why it’s at the heart of GCIP’s mission to leverage UK expertise in gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) across our work. As part of this mission, GCIP’s GEDSI Capability Team recently designed a set of criteria to integrate GEDSI into infrastructure project development. After two peer review briefings in August 2024 – featuring some of the biggest names in infrastructure investment – there was unanimous acknowledgement among the reviewers that the proposed GEDSI criteria will help infrastructure project developers and sponsors create inclusive, accessible infrastructure. As one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, Mozambique is a priority for mobilising investment for inclusive, climate-resilient infrastructure projects. To make these projects a reality, GCIP led a high-level dialogue during the Mozambique–UK Business and Investment Forum earlier this year. The event brought together around 100 representatives from the private sector, financial institutions, diplomatic missions and the Government of Mozambique. The dialogue focused on investment opportunities in the infrastructure and energy sectors, a crucial topic for the country in the face of climate change. ?? The governments of Ghana and the UK have jointly established a Climate Finance Committee to enhance climate finance flows in Ghana. GCIP will play an important role supporting the Climate Finance Committee – focusing the topics of discussion, identifying appropriate invitees and tracking performance against actions. In turn, the committee will provide an invaluable opportunity to obtain feedback on GCIP’s work on climate finance in Ghana and, in line with adaptive programming principles, allow GCIP to respond flexibly as needs and opportunities shift. GCIP has hit the ground running in Mozambique. Last week, our Sustainable Finance Team held their first in-country meeting and discussed plans for sustainable growth in Mozambique with the Ministry of Economy and Finance's Climate Finance Unit. Together, we will increase national access to climate finance, create more bankable infrastructure projects and improve the climate resilience of some of Mozambique’s most important cities ?? The UK Government Centres of Expertise help partner governments in low- and middle-income countries to pursue resilient and sustainable economic growth. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office established a Centre of Expertise in Green Cities and Infrastructure (GCI) to coordinate UK leadership in cities and infrastructure from inside and outside of government. GCI is part of the British Investment Partnerships approach – the UK’s economic and development offer to partner countries. Read more about the CGI Centre of Expertise here: https://lnkd.in/eBVGsH6M
