The federal estate-tax lifetime exclusion amount, how much an individual can shelter from estate and gift taxes, is up to $13.99 million in 2025, up from $13.61 million this year. Individuals can make lifetime gifts, outright or in irrevocable trusts, up to that amount without incurring federal gift tax. The giver owes tax only if the amount goes over the threshold.? A separate limit on tax-free gifts, the annual exclusion amount, is $19,000 for 2025, up from $18,000 this year. These gifts don’t count toward the lifetime maximum, and neither the gift giver nor receiver is taxed.

The IRS released the 2024 inflation-adjusted exemptions and exclusions for estate, gift, and GST tax in Rev. Proc. 2023-34 as follows: ·???The estate and gift exemption amount (currently $12.92 million) will increase to $13.61 million for 2024 ($27.22 million per couple). The GST exemption will likewise increase by the same amount. ·???The annual gift tax exclusion will increase from the current $17,000 up to $18,000 in 2024.
