Highlight Series: Dallas Area Rapid Transit Transit in Dallas began in the early 1900s with Texas' first interurban electric railway, connecting Dallas to nearby communities. Monroe Shops, built in 1914, played a key role and is now DART Police HQ, blending history and sustainability as the first LEED? Platinum public building on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, DART runs the longest light rail network in the U.S., connecting residential areas, business hubs, and cultural spots. DART’s buses, streetcars, and GoLink shuttle services make transit more accessible for all. DART holds an Annual Student Art Contest for the purpose of promoting public transportation through art. Proposals for draconian cuts to DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) would be devastating for the Dallas region. DART's value as an economic and mobility asset has become more apparent under the visionary leadership of President & CEO Nadine S. Lee (A Downtown Dallas, Inc. Board of Governors member) over the past three-plus years. A recent University of North Texas economic impact study found that 31 transit-oriented projects in the DART service area generated nearly $1 billion in direct spending between 2019?and 2021?and?spurred nearly 11,000 new jobs. Lee and her team have also made strategic investments to enhance the rider experience and ensure that safety, cleanliness, and reliability are at the forefront. DART is now carrying over 80% of pre-pandemic ridership levels, ahead of the national average of 76%. Bus and rail service cancellations and missed trips are now at less than one percent -- down from 15 percent just two years ago. Thank you to Ruben Landa and the Greater Dallas Planning Council for pushing back on the short-sighted effort to defund DART. https://lnkd.in/gf3kRYAM
