The Baltimore-to-Richmond corridor has the potential to evolve into a seamlessly connected network where every rail line, bus route and transit hub fuels economic growth and creates new opportunities for people, businesses and communities. Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced significant investments in passenger rail in our region, including up to $24 million for the design of Union Station’s? larger modernization project and $58 million for construction and security improvements, as well as nearly $123 million for renovations at Baltimore Penn Station.? Union Station’s expansion is a transformative initiative, moving us closer to a network of seamless rail connections in the heart of DC. The investment in Baltimore Penn Station will support the city’s connection to the economic engine of the Northeast Corridor. These projects make progress towards the goals outlined in the 5-Year Refresh of the Partnership’s Blueprint for Regional Mobility, a comprehensive framework which identifies priorities focused on modernizing rail which will expand access to opportunities across the region. In addition, our 2020 Capital Region Rail Vision highlighted the need for investments like these to enable additional regional connectivity with expanded and improved passenger rail service.?
