Kinship Care: A Story of Resilience & Hope As far back as she can remember, Abby has lived with her grandmother, Marlene, in Barstow, CA. What was supposed to be temporary became permanent when addiction, domestic violence, and trauma made it unsafe for Abby to live with her mom. Born exposed to drugs and alcohol, Abby has faced learning disabilities, mental health struggles, and physical challenges. Marlene, who had already raised 12 children, stepped up once again—this time for her granddaughter. But raising a child, especially while facing exhaustion and financial strain, can feel overwhelming. That’s where A Greater Hope’s "Homecoming" Kinship Support Services Program comes in. Through weekly case management, therapy, and help with basic needs like food and clothing, we help kinship caregivers navigate the challenges of raising children who have experienced trauma. Our team works closely with families to ensure stability, healing, and long-term success. Today, Abby is a high school freshman with a 4.0 GPA, a close circle of friends, and a love for music. She plays the flute in her school band and even hosted her own Girl Scout cookie sales table! Abby’s story isn’t unique—1.1 million children in California are being raised in kinship care. A Greater Hope is committed to providing the support and resources these families need to thrive. ?? "Homecoming" isn’t just a program; it’s a lifeline. ?? We believe strong families build strong communities. #KinshipCare #AGreaterHope #StrongerFamilies #HomecomingProgram #SupportForCaregivers

Advocating for the Future of Foster Care On February 25, 2025, our Advocacy Officer,?Joe Lopez, represented A Greater Hope at California Alliance of Child & Family Services Advocacy Day?in Sacramento, ensuring that the voices of foster youth, families, and providers were heard at the state level. Joe’s?visit?brought him to the office of?State Senator Sasha Renee Perez, who was elected in November 2024 to represent?California’s 25th District. Senator Perez currently chairs the?Senate Education Committee?and serves on multiple other committees. During the visit, our group met with?Legislative Aide, Cayley Chan, to discuss critical issues impacting foster care agencies and the children we serve. Our advocacy focused on four key requests: 1. Addressing the FFA Insurance Crisis?– Ensuring sustainable and fair insurance policies for foster family agencies. 2. One-Time Short-Term Budget Request for FFA Funding?– Seeking essential financial support to stabilize services for foster families. 3. Support for SB 531?– A bill that would add?mental health awareness?to the required?health education curriculum for K-12 students. 4. Solutions for Hiring Delays?– Reducing extensive delays in hiring due to background checks for applicants who have lived outside of California. Advocacy efforts like these are crucial to ensuring that policies reflect the real challenges faced by foster families and the professionals who support them. Thank you to?Joe Lopez?for his dedication to this important work! #FosterCare #ChildAdvocacy #CACFS #PublicPolicy #AGreaterHope #SB531 #MentalHealthAwareness #AdvocacyDay #CaliforniaLegislation

The #AWBW workshop, Hosted by D'Ellen H., began with a reflection of Black History. Participants selected their 'hands', layering them in a circular formation—a mandala—representing unity, healing, and transformation. Each #handprint held a story: a child's hope, a mother's wisdom, an elder’s strength. Words of empowerment, symbols, and personal affirmations filled the #mandala, turning it into a living testament to resilience, culture and love. Participants also received information from AGH on @ca.ocpsc CA Community Resource Guide and Youth Mental Health Apps @brightlifekids @soluna.app #agreaterhopeca #artworkshop #awindowbetweenworlds #traumainformed #blackhistorymonth
