Yesterday, MaryLynn Lodor, General Manager of the Miami Conservancy District, delivered an insightful presentation "A River Runs Through It" at the Fitton Center's Celebrating Self series in Hamilton. Her talk illuminated how the Great Miami River has been foundational to Hamilton's past, present, and future. A particularly compelling aspect of her presentation highlighted how the Miami Conservancy District's flood protection system doesn't just keep our communities safe - it creates the foundation for the recreational renaissance we're experiencing along the Great Miami Riverway. The flood protection that has served our region for over 100 years continues to evolve, enabling new opportunities for connection with our river through recreation, economic development, and community gathering spaces. Thank you to MaryLynn for sharing this important perspective on how infrastructure, safety, and quality of life intersect along our river corridor. And thank you to the Fitton Center For Creative Arts for hosting this valuable community conversation. #WaterResources #Infrastructure #Community #Recreation #GreatMiamiRiver #Hamilton #Ohio City of Hamilton, Ohio

The Great Miami Riverway Coalition is pleased to announce that Chris Fine, Development Director for the City of Miamisburg, Ohio, has been elected as the new chairperson of the coalition. His two-year term began in January 2025. Fine has been an active member of the Riverway Coalition since its inception in 2017 and brings extensive experience in urban planning and economic development to his new leadership role. As chair of the Riverway Coalition, Fine will collaborate with Riverway communities and agencies to: Attract more visitors to the region. Support economic development initiatives. Strengthen river corridor neighborhoods. Increase the use of recreational, historical, and cultural assets. “We are thrilled to welcome Chris Fine as chair of the Great Miami Riverway,” said Ginger Clark, Manager of the Great Miami Riverway. “His extensive experience in community development and his leadership in riverfront revitalization in Miamisburg make him an exceptional choice for this role. Chris has a deep understanding of regional collaboration and a strong commitment to leveraging our natural assets for economic growth and community engagement.” Fine, a Troy native, earned a bachelor’s degree in urban planning from the University of Cincinnati. He began his career with the City of Dayton, where he specialized in historic preservation planning before transitioning to the City of Miamisburg as City Planner. For the past 14 years, he has served as Development Director, overseeing planning, zoning, code enforcement, building permitting, and economic development functions. A passionate advocate for outdoor recreation, Fine enjoys biking along regional trails and kayaking on the river with his family. One of his favorite traditions is watching the Fourth of July fireworks from a kayak on the Great Miami River. Under Fine’s leadership, Miamisburg has experienced significant growth, particularly in its downtown area. He played a pivotal role in implementing the City’s Downtown Master Plan, which has transformed downtown Miamisburg into a thriving shopping and dining destination. In early 2024, the city celebrated the completion of its Riverfront Park, a project nearly 25 years in the making. Miamisburg will also host the 2025 Great Miami Riverway River Summit in Riverfront Park on May 2, 2025. “We have a rich history of collaboration in the Dayton region, and the Great Miami Riverway Coalition exemplifies that,” said Fine. “Coalition members understand that we can make a greater impact promoting our assets and encouraging their use collectively rather than individually. Miamisburg is proud to be a founding member of this organization. We saw its value then, and we continue to see its impact today.” Miami Conservancy District

Did you know? MetroParks of Butler County manages around 12 miles of the Great Miami River Recreational Trail. And they are making significant progress toward closing key trail gaps in Butler County. Thanks to their successful grant applications totaling $3.8 million, design is underway to connect Timberhill MetroPark to Monroe and complete missing segments in Monroe and Lemon Township. When completed in 2028, these connections will bring us closer to our goal of a fully connected trail system from Hamilton County to Shelby County. Our partners are working tirelessly to create seamless recreational experiences along the Great Miami Riverway! #GreatMiamiRiverway #TrailConnections #OhioTrails #BikeOhio #GMRRT #GreatMiamiRiverRecreationalTrail

The Miami Conservancy District has been included in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 2024, opening new opportunities for enhancing our riverway communities. This authorization enables a feasibility study that could lead to significant federal funding for flood protection, ecosystem restoration, and recreational improvements along our corridor.
?? BIG NEWS for the Great Miami River and Southwest Ohio! ?? The Miami Conservancy District has officially been authorized in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024 under Section 125! This milestone unlocks the path for a feasibility study that will pave the way for transformative progress in flood risk management, ecosystem restoration, and enhanced recreation along the Great Miami River. ?? “This is a win for the Miami Valley and a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together to protect our communities, improve recreational opportunities, and invest in our natural habitats.” — Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) For over a century, MCD’s flood protection system has safeguarded our region. But as our infrastructure ages, the need for reinvestment is critical. This authorization allows us to: ?? Diversify funding for infrastructure upgrades ?? Strengthen flood protection systems ?? Restore ecosystems and expand recreational spaces ?? “This project is proof of the collective vision for a stronger, healthier Great Miami River.” — MaryLynn Lodor, MCD General Manager We’re proud to collaborate with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and community partners to ensure a safer, more resilient future. ??
