Creating a better informed and more confident Great Lakes community where everyone knows what’s happening in the water. We put lake information into peoples’ hands in support of the Smart Great Lakes vision. smartgreatlakes.org A bi-national nonprofit, GLOS provides end-to-end data services that support science, policy, management, and industry in the U.S. and Canada. Whether deciding to venture out on a boat or confronting the effects of climate change, we want to equip observers with high-quality, up-to-date lake information from the region’s observing network. Established as a 501 c-3 non profit, GLOS serves as a certified regional association of NOAA’s Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). ioos.noaa.gov

We are thrilled that the Lakebed 2030 initiative is continuing to rally support! This collaborative approach to mapping the Great Lakes at high density will utilize numerous technologies and require many organizations and agencies, many of whom are already hard at work! Check out lakebed2030.org for more information or complete Northwestern Michigan College’s campaign form to get involved: https://lnkd.in/gYHqH_UM. https://lnkd.in/gcJAVcby
The Buoy of October! Common Name: Georgian Bay Nearshore NDBC ID: SPOT-31998C Owner and Operator: Chippewas Of Nawash Unceded First Nation (CNUFN) Favourite Fish: Lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis; Dikameg in Anishinaabemowin) Hobbies: Niagara escarpment enthusiast and floatation expert Winning Quality: Willing to embrace the coming storms The Georgian Bay Nearshore buoy was deployed in October 2024 by the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Fisheries Assessment program. This live stream data platform is equipped with two water temperature sensors at 1 meter and 5 meter depths. The Georgian Bay Nearshore buoy is intended to stay in the water over the coming winter months to provide insights on a time of year often missed in fisheries related monitoring. The information collected will be used to track key seasonal windows of fish species of cultural and socioeconomic importance to the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, contributing to ongoing research projects being conducted in collaboration with academic and government partners. Take a look at all of the data and favorite the buoy on Seagull -> https://lnkd.in/ghucbRuM ! Photo Credit: Breanna Redford
This is the last call for input! The Seagull Survey will close on Friday, November 1st. Please consider taking the time (est. 5-10 minutes) to share your thoughts. Everyone who gives feedback has a chance to win a YETI cooler! https://lnkd.in/gsBfrXup
Tonight! If you are wanting to share your thoughts on future observing assets in Lake Huron, come on by Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena from 5-7. Event info: https://lnkd.in/evssCC_N https://lnkd.in/e6mqHybY
Take a look at the work our partners at RAEON/University of Windsor are doing to help protect drinking water of the Great Lakes!
Excited to share the work we're doing at RAEON/University of Windsor alongside our partners, including Union Water Supply Systems, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and various academic institutions. We're developing an early warning system to protect drinking water in the Great Lakes. Check out the CBC News article: https://lnkd.in/e9BH87Xb

The Buoy of September: Common Name:?Dunkirk Buoy BSU NDBC ID:?BSC1 Owner and Operator:?The Great Lakes Center at Buffalo State University Favorite bird:?The Common Tern?(seen standing on buoy in the photo above) Hobbies:?Seiche seeing, stargazing, and bird watching Greatest Pride:?Helping boaters make safe decisions The Dunkirk Buoy is deployed by the?Great Lakes Center at Buffalo State University. This buoy contains a set of sensors for measuring meteorological data including wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and solar radiation. Additionally, this buoy measures wave height and wave period. The information collected from this Lake Erie buoy?can be used for climate modeling, lake current and energy budget modeling, as well as for the study of nutrient dynamics and fisheries. It is also helpful for?commercial and recreational navigation by providing real time information regarding wind and wave conditions. Last week, the Dunkirk Buoy was brought in for the winter, BUT you can still access historical data on Seagull! https://lnkd.in/efV5yvVu FYI: the Workspace Beta works best on a computer but if you are using a mobile device, turn it sideways to enhance the graph experience ?? credit: Brian Haas
