As the third-largest Michigan-based electric utility and the largest member-owned power company in Michigan, we have succeeded because we’re a well-run business that is committed to providing energy solutions to more than 126,000 member-consumers in 26 counties in western and northern Michigan, from Kalamazoo to the Mackinac Straits. Since 1937 our success has been built around the mutual trust we share with our member-consumers. That’s because our members are also the owners of our electric cooperative. Great Lakes Energy is governed by a Board of Directors that is elected by our member-owners. We were formed more than 80 years ago for the sole purpose of providing service and value to our member-owners. Today, we continue looking out for you, with eight office locations and more than 290 employees to serve the needs of our members. As a member-owned cooperative, Great Lakes Energy allocates and eventually returns profits to our members in the form of capital credit refunds. We have refunded capital credits every year since 2003, totaling over $87.5 million. We will continue to do so as financial conditions allow.     We were proud to host a Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event at our Boyne City Headquarters last night! For a second time, we co-hosted the event with Boyne City Public Schools and Char-Em ISD, who are our partners in offering an innovative electrical lineworker class to high school students across northern Michigan. The culinary arts program based at Boyne City High School provided catering for the event, which is another Char-Em CTE program. In addition to networking, attendees had the opportunity to learn about GLE and Truestream and how the partnerships among the three host organizations are making a difference in the community.

    We’re excited to welcome John Kran as the new CEO of MECA following Craig Borr’s upcoming retirement this year in March. John Kran Named New CEO of the Michigan Electric Cooperative Association LANSING, Mich.—After an extensive executive search, the Michigan Electric Cooperative Association (MECA) Board announced today that John Kran will succeed Craig Borr as MECA’s next Chief Executive Officer. Borr, set to retire on March 14, has served as CEO of MECA since 2012 and has been a fierce co-op advocate for over 40 years. John Kran most recently served as the National Legislative Counsel for Michigan Farm Bureau where he led federal lobbying and advocacy efforts on behalf of the organization and acted as lead spokesperson on legislative and regulatory issues, a role he’s held since 2014. Prior to that he served as Public Policy Manager and Legislative Assistant to Representative Bill Huizenga and as a Regional Representative for Michigan Farm Bureau. John received his Political Science degree from Hope College, his master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University and his MBA from Indiana University. He grew up working on the Kran dairy farm in west Michigan and he and his wife reside in Spring Lake with their children. “Kran’s extensive lobbying and legislative work on behalf of rural Michigan will serve him well in his new role,” said Chris O’Neill, MECA board chairman. “He’s a trusted voice in Lansing and Washington D.C. and that will bode well for the association and its members.” About Michigan Electric Cooperative Association The Michigan Electric Cooperative Association (MECA) is a member-driven organization representing the interests of Michigan's electric cooperatives.     Today, our GLE Board of Directors had their monthly meeting in Sault Ste. Marie and had a blast learning about renewable energy at the Cloverland Electric Cooperative’s Hydro Plant. This historic plant, built in 1902, is a whopping 1/4 mile long, houses 74 turbines, generates 36 megawatts of electricity, and operates 24/7.
