We want to give a huge thanks to everyone who attended Think and Green Drink event last Thursday! We had over 50 guests who spent time learning about Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, speaking with Dr. Gleason about reef ecology, and meeting new and familiar faces. We had a fin-tastic time and can’t wait to host more community programming! Ocean stewardship is in our hearts and minds every day. We aim to develop ocean stewards through education, public awareness, and supporting the research and conservation initiatives of Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary. A chapter of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, we promote the Sanctuary’s initiatives, raise funds on their behalf, and develop events to raise awareness for ocean conservation in close collaboration with the Sanctuary management team. Our mission is to support and strengthen Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary as a unique and vital landmark for the community and the nation through charitable and educational purposes. Our vision is to expand and strengthen the network of national marine sanctuaries for the benefit of current and future generations.

Next up for our Gray's Reef staff spotlight is our Outreach and Social Media Specialist, Danielle! She’s responsible for running the sanctuary's social media and website, as well as coordinating outreach events and running the volunteer program. She has a huge passion for communicating science and fostering stewardship for our ocean ecosystems. Danielle’s favorite marine animal is the Manta Ray! As a previous dive instructor in Hawaii, she had the incredible opportunity to see the gentle giants on a daily basis. She even gave us a fun fact: Manta Rays have no teeth or stingers! Even her joke revolves around them: Why did the Manta Ray want to talk to the diver? He wanted to have a manta-man conversation! ?? It might not be summer yet, but that didn’t stop the crew from setting sail on the R/V GANNET for Training Day! Our Gray's Reef Captain and Operations Intern received vital training such as fire safety and man overboard drills to prepare for the sanctuary's scientific research expeditions and teacher workshops. Join us in standing up for NOAA and marine sanctuaries! Contact your elected officials to defend and restore NOAA to ensure the agency's critical work can continue. https://lnkd.in/e7GrbRsJ
TAKE ACTION: Speak Up for Marine Sanctuary Staff!? ? NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries staff were just fired by the Trump Administration. ? This is a devastating blow to our national marine sanctuaries and the coastal communities that depend on them. ? And this is only the first wave of attacks to our underwater parks if we don’t act now. ? We’re urging elected officials to speak up to restore the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Sanctuary workforce. ? NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries staff dedicate themselves every day to these national treasures, which are an enduring underwater legacy for the American people. ? These treasured places must be protected, ensuring American families, coastal communities, and local industries and businesses are not left to fend for themselves in the face of growing environmental and economic challenges. ? Sending a letter takes less than two minutes—and shows your lawmakers that their constituents care about NOAA and our national marine sanctuaries. ? Send your letter NOW directly to your members of Congress! marinesanctuary.org/action

Some positive news to start the day! The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation was able to help remove a derelict vessel that been on the shore of a California beach for close to 10 years. Our team across the sanctuary system focuses on marine debris removal as one of our priority areas. Check out the ABC7 news clip!
See our team in action on ABC7 News! As part of an unprecedented large #MarineDebris removal effort across several national marine sanctuaries, this week we are removing a derelict vessel left as a hazard on a popular California beach since 2016. ? The removal of the Verna provides a cleaner and safer shore before the busy summer tourism season! ? Marine debris is one of the greatest challenges facing our global ocean and the waterways that lead to it. Large marine debris items, such as abandoned and derelict vessels, threaten marine wildlife and sensitive habitat and create safety and navigational hazards for recreation, tourism, and fishing. ? This work is made possible thanks to a partnership with the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Marine Debris Program, Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries, and California State Parks.
