关于我们

Gravl is a platform that helps universities sell more of their research services all under their own brand. We built Gravl with the belief that every life ever saved started with research. (Techstars Boston, 2024) Unfortunately, many cutting-edge scientific tools and services needed to make life-saving discoveries are hidden within universities, making it difficult for external researchers to access them. This leads to inefficiencies and millions of budget losses for universities every single year. Our platform solves this problem by providing universities with a front-end commerce experience and a back-end system for seamless workflow management.

The Shift from Indirect to Direct Costs NIH indirect cost cuts are forcing universities to rethink how they sustain core facilities. Institutions relying on F&A rates face budget shortfalls—but some are turning this challenge into an opportunity. What’s Changing? ?? Indirect costs are being converted into direct, billable expenses. ?? Institutions are adopting blended models to track and recover costs. ?? Universities are scaling external revenue to reduce reliance on internal funding. ?? How Leading Institutions Are Adapting ?? Tier 1 & 2 universities (Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), Association of American Universities (AAU)) are positioning core facilities as service hubs. ?? Assn of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF) members are shifting to direct cost recovery models. ?? Some institutions are replacing fixed overhead fees with transaction-based pricing. ?? The Takeaway Core facilities don’t need to shrink—they need to evolve. Institutions that adapt will secure new funding and industry collaborations. ?? How is your institution handling these shifts? Drop your thoughts below! ?? #ResearchFunding #CoreFacilities #HigherEdFinance #ScienceFunding #IndirectCosts #APLU #AAU #ABRF

?? Federal Research Funding is Uncertain – Universities Must Take Control ?? Recent policy shifts have paused federal research funding, leaving many institutions facing deep uncertainty. While the long-term impact is unclear, one thing is certain: universities must diversify their revenue streams beyond government grants. A few weeks ago, we shared how the funding landscape is changing. Here’s the post https://lnkd.in/eYC5RU5Q. Institutions that take steps to proactively monetize core facilities will be better positioned to weather this uncertainty. ?? What’s the solution? Platforms like GRAVL allow universities to digitize and commercialize their core facilities—turning internal research resources into scalable revenue streams. ?? Is your institution rethinking its funding model? Let’s discuss how core research facilities can become a sustainable source of revenue. #HigherEd #UniversityLeadership #CoreFacilities #ResearchFunding #NIH #SciencePolicy

We have shared before how GRAVL is helping universities transform underutilized core facilities into revenue-generating assets. Given the shifting landscape of higher education and the uncertainty around federal science funding there are important consideration for research instiutions. ? The Funding Landscape Is Changing. Are You Prepared? With the potential for significant cuts to government funding under the new administration, universities and research institutions are facing a growing risk to their financial stability. The?NIH?and other funding sources have long been the backbone of many research operations, but as federal budgets tighten, the reliance on these funds may no longer be a safe bet. ? Departments across universities are already rethinking their funding strategies, and core facilities—often underutilized—are uniquely positioned to offset these potential losses. The need for innovative, scalable revenue solutions has never been more urgent. ? GRAVL Can Help You Navigate This Uncertainty By creating a?digital storefront?for your core facilities, GRAVL allows universities to tap into external markets such as biotech, pharma, and research, unlocking?new revenue streams. Whether or not federal funding remains stable, the opportunity to generate revenue from existing assets remains within your control. ? Here’s why now is the time to act: Best case: Federal funding doesn’t face significant cuts, but you’ve already monetized underused assets, creating a sustainable revenue stream. Worst case: Funding does decrease, but your core facilities are now a reliable source of revenue, helping you weather the financial challenges ahead. #CoreFacilities, #HigherEducation,#UniversityLeadership, #AAU #APLU #ABRF

?? "Survey data indicate that core facilities nationwide cover ~50% of their costs through user fees. For institutions with many facilities, this is not sustainable." – Philip Hockberger and Assn of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF) Core facilities power innovation, but funding gaps hold them back. At GRAVL, we’re tackling this with a platform that gives these labs a digital storefront—connecting them to biotech and pharma while unlocking new revenue streams. WHY? Because every life ever saved started with research. Big thanks to Philip Hockberger and Assn of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF) for spotlighting the ROI potential when user bases grow. Let’s make core facilities the powerhouses they’re meant to be. ?? Got ideas or thoughts? Let’s connect. #CoreLabs?#ABRF

GRAVL's thesis has always been based on a simple principle. That every life ever saved started with research so providing digital access to thee #1 tools that drive life-saving discoveries is core to our values. However, we remain stoic about how Universities have adapted to the turbulent political climate since 2000. This instability threatens universities' autonomy especially when combined with federal funding uncertainties. We agree with Fram Virjee, president and chief executive of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges that autonomy "is not a liberal or a conservative issue." To stay independent universities need to find new sources of revenue as they did by bringing education online using platforms like 2u, Honor, and others. There is hope because, in recent years, SaaS platforms have unlocked powerful opportunities by enabling underserved sectors to operate with the sophistication of major players.?Toast?revolutionized the restaurant industry by giving small businesses digital tools to rival large chains.?Shopify?transformed e-commerce, empowering countless independent retailers to go global. Similarly,?Square?simplified payments for small businesses, leveling the playing field in commerce. And?Alchemy?recently opened new doors for community clinics by providing infrastructure to run in-house pharmacies, addressing a critical need. ? GRAVL?is following this proven playbook for the life sciences and research sector. By giving academic labs the digital storefront and marketing capabilities they lack, we’re enabling them to compete on the same stage as major commercial labs, unlocking a market as vast and ready as those transformed by the giants before us. This is our opportunity to redefine how academic research labs grow, scale, and impact the world. Shalanda Young we appreciate the continued funding of the sciences. However, we can do more by innovating how scientific tools are accessed as we did for the CHIPS and Science Act to significantly invest in our nation’s scientific research and innovation enterprise! We stand in solidarity with Mark Becker and @BarbaraSnyder in making "higher education more accessible and affordable," but suggest we extend that to accessibility to the most cutting-edge scientific tools! Universities are facing a major financial crunch. NIH funding hasn't been enough for a long time, and student enrollments and dollars from online education are also falling. As CFOs take more of an operational role at universities creative sources of funding are needed...fast! On the plus side, these universities have major research assets that can be leveraged both for the good of humanity and to support education.
