  • Grassroots was so honored to have the opportunity to share resources about our services, including suicide prevention resources, recently at a Fundraiser and Celebration of Life in memory of Westley Scott Muhl. We also earnestly thank Westley's aunt Pat, who organized the event and donated money raised to Grassroots, along with many of her friends. Your support means the world to us and will help us in serving those in the community who come to us in times of need ???? • Grassroots is excited to celebrate this week's All Star, a team member who is making a difference at Grassroots through their work helping our consumers and other team members. Today we are excited to celebrate Phoebe Woods-Orsini, Volunteer and In-Kind Donations Coordinator. Phoebe joined Grassroots in August 2024 and jumped right into an incredibly busy and important position. She got warmed up with the back-to-school collection to support kids in the emergency shelter and families supported through the crisis center. She then tackled the hectic holiday season at Grassroots, managing the collection and distribution of gift cards and in-kind gifts for families and individual residents in the emergency shelter. She and her team of volunteers helped make sure our building was festively decorated for the holiday season. When the emergency shelter expansion and Cold Weather Shelter opened in December, Phoebe put her super-Volunteer Coordinator powers to work organizing volunteers from multiple congregations and filling the meal slots on our meal calendars. In her spare time, she has coordinated a variety of Tuesday evening social activities for the kids and adults in the emergency shelter including game nights, yoga and children's play activities. We are so grateful to Phoebe for her hard work and dedication to those we serve. Thank you for all you have accomplished! • Congratulations to our ASIST graduates! These Grassroots staff and community members joined us for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide in order to work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. The workshop helps individuals feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. One of our trainees (and an amazing Grassroots community advocate), Pat, shared some insight about how the training has had an impact on her: "I just wanted to take the time and try to explain how fortunate I feel to have taken the Suicide prevention class (ASIST). There were parts that were difficult for me to process, but I cannot tell you how much it helped me grow in so many ways. Not to mention how much more empowered I feel to help not only my family but anyone I encounter that may be having a really difficult time. The two leaders of the class were absolutely phenomenal. They encouraged us to push ourselves, but not to push ourselves too far. We did multiple skits, where we had to actually use the word suicide over and over. I feel very fortunate that we have Grassroots as part of our community. Thank you for doing so many wonderful things for so many people. I guess the main part that I have yet to express is that I walked away from this class feeling like people care about people that feel suicidal. It gave me hope that our community is working towards starting that so important conversation about suicide and the possibility that it is preventable." We are so thankful for Pat and all of the attendees of this life-saving workshop, as well as our wonderful trainers Joan and Ashley! Stay tuned for other trainings from Grassroots. #crisiscenter #crisisservices #mentalhealthmatters #marylandmentalhealth #savealife #stopthestigma #itsoktoaskforhelp #suicideprevention #suicideawareness #asist
