This 3 foot by 5 foot paper had been folded into 28 sections. Several parts of the family tree were either torn or completely fragmented. This is a serigraph print by artist Sister Corita Kent, printed on a heavyweight, pellon-like material. The frame that previously housed the print had shattered glass, and when the print was removed, tiny glass shards were found on the fibrous surface. The print also showed signs of damage, including foxing and brown discoloration along the bottom edge, with tight cockling throughout. For conservation, the glass shards were carefully removed, the stains were reduced, and tears and losses were repaired. Finally, the print was flattened. The transformation is truly remarkable! . . . Flashback Friday!! Tiding is a term used to describe staining on paper from liquid damage. This sheet music had brown tiding across the entire width of the sheet and a smaller area of tiding in the upper right corner. Through meticulous aqueous treatments the tiding was reduced and the overall tone of the paper improved. ???? This is a hardcover edition of Naturalistic Photography for Students of the Art by P.H. Emerson, published in 1889. The cloth cover showed signs of wear, including fraying at the corners, foxing stains, and ingrained dirt across the surface. Several interior pages also detached from the spine. During treatment, the front cover was dry cleaned, stains reduced, the spine repaired, and the edges and corners were reinforced to ensure stability. Flashback Friday!! Detail of a 19th century advertisement poster that had severe brown staining caused by unknown liquid exposure. The art had also been housed in acidic matting materials which contributed to the severity of the stains. Overall aqueous treatment was performed which helped reduce the stains. Additional hours of local hand-applied treatment was necessary to further reduce each tide line. The result was fantastic and very satisfying!
