Today we honor Thanksgiving and celebrate in the communities we have in our families, towns, and schools. May you all enjoy a restful and communal holiday with loved ones. Thanksgiving originated as a practice of giving thanks for food after a precarious growing season and the potential that there would not be enough food to harvest and feed community members. When a harvest was successful, often after days of fasting, colonial men and women would indulge in a large meal they referred to as Thanksgiving. This practice was at times celebrated multiple times in a single year or on an annual basis and the date of the celebration varied by state. The first Thanksgiving Day address was given by President George Washington in 1789. Other presidents would subsequently give speeches on Thanksgiving, however, it wasn't until writer Sarah Josepha Hale that there was a uniform date for the holiday across the nation. She called on presidents for over 30 years to establish a national date for the holiday. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln stated that Thanksgiving be celebrated on the final Thursday of November. It was officially signed into law as a bill in 1941 to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and traditions have since come to include the Macy's Day Parade and the presidential pardoning of a turkey each year.?
