On December 3rd we are co-hosting a knowledge session on?Biodiversity Net Gain and Nature Recovery with Legal Voices for the Future. The session will explore the state of nature in England and the legal framework in place for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). The session will also cover the opportunities/challenges of BNG from a developer and landowner perspective, the concept of market creation for offsite biodiversity gains and how BNG can be legally secured. The session will be led by LVF’s Stewardship Committee member,?Harriet Hall and include a panel interview with Molly Biddell, Dr Juliet Rose, Henry Parkinson and Isabel Sgambellone.

PhD student Nikolaus Hastreiter investigates?the effectiveness of Climate Action 100+, the world’s largest investor coalition on climate change in this new working paper. The study aims to isolate the causal effect of Climate Action 100+ on its focus companies using a multidimensional approach to measuring corporate climate action and an analysis of Difference-in-Differences with companies not engaged by the coalition. Key findings suggest that Climate Action 100+ has not affected climate-related disclosures or immediate emissions reductions, but its collaborative engagement has led to greater ambition in medium- and long-term carbon emission reduction targets. Notably, this impact is concentrated among the “Plus” companies, which were selected on a discretionary basis. You can read all of the key findings, and download the report on our site ??

$300bn climate finance commitment from developed countries at #COP29 is an important advance but falls far short say Amar Bhattacharya, Vera Songwe and Nicholas Stern. In their joint statement the Co-Chairs of the Independent High-Level Expert Group on Climate Finance call for a ramping up of support from all sources to assist developing countries in making stronger pledges for action in the national determined contributions that are due to be submitted ahead of COP30. https://lnkd.in/e8acJweT

In 2009, developed countries pledged $100 billion annually by 2020 in climate finance for developing nations. Over a decade later, inconsistent reporting and vague definitions obscure whether this target has been met, if the funding is additional, and whether it supports Paris Agreement goals. In our latest commentary Sylvan Lutz and Camila Cristancho highlight the urgent need for COP29’s New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) to establish clear standards, accountability and transparency to bridge the climate finance gap in developing countries.
