We have the unique opportunity of representing a diverse roster of artists whose strong artistic voices help us view the world from different perspectives. We sat down with artist, Tracy Poindexter-Canton, to discuss how she melds together concepts in literary imagery with her experience of the Black American Identity. Using upcycled materials, her pieces hold a physical and metaphorical depth--telling a new story through repurposing found objects. In these dynamic works, she balances stories of the past and present--exploring how they inform one another. ? “Literature has always been a part of my creative DNA. I’m drawn to themes of resilience, identity and legacy — elements that are woven throughout Black storytelling. Toni Morrison’s lush, layered narratives often find their way into my work, as well as the rhythm and emotional depth of poets like Nikki Giovanni and Ntozake Shange."
