Experience the "wow" of walking into Sterling Memorial Library. #Yale Often referred to as “the cathedral of learning,” the library was designed by James Gamble Rogers — architect of 18 campus buildings (1921-1935) — to pay homage to scholarship. Evidence of Rogers’s hand is visible in the reading rooms, alcoves, and study spaces throughout the Collegiate Gothic masterpiece, which was dedicated in 1931. Yale’s largest library is named for its benefactor, New York City lawyer and 1864 alumnus John William Sterling. With its striking architectural design, 160 Federal Street is recognized as one of Boston’s most visible, most distinguished, and best preserved Art Deco building. 160 Federal was built in 1929–1930 to a design by George W. Fuller and Parker, Thomas & Rice as the United Shoe Machinery Building and was the tallest office building in Boston for almost 20 years. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and in 1983 it was designated a Boston Landmark. Grand Light restored numerous historic pendant lights by referencing E.F. Caldwell & Co. archives from the Smithsonian Libraries.
