Grand Communications is celebrating Black History Month. In the spotlight this week: Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Charley Pride! ? Jackie Joyner-Kersee is a four-time Olympian who has won three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. She also played herself—in animated form—in the PBS KIDS series “Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum,” where she shared her step-by-step approach to winning gold!? ? Charley Pride was a baseball player turned country singer, who is often credited as being the genre’s first major Black superstar. It’s Black History Month, in the spotlight this week: Buddy Guy and Nikki Giovanni! Buddy Guy is a Grammy-winning blues guitarist and singer who has inspired legendary musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and more. The story of his life and iconic career was featured in the WNET documentary “Buddy Guy: The Blues Chase The Blues Away” on PBS. Nikki Giovanni, one of the best-known Black poets in the world, was a New York Times and Los Angeles Times bestselling author and recipient of seven NAACP Image Awards. Sammy Davis Jr., a Grammy-winning entertainer, part of the legendary Rat Pack, and civil rights activist whose amazing journey was featured in the WNET documentary “American Masters: “I’ve Gotta Be Me” on PBS. Misty Copeland is a celebrated ballerina who made history as the first Black female principal dancer in American Ballet Theatre history. She also appeared as herself (in animated form!) in an episode of Fred Rogers Productions’ Peg + Cat on PBS KIDS! André De Shields is an actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, and director who has won an Emmy, two Grammys, and six Tony Awards!
