Our final Mentor Monday session of the semester, led by Dr. Naomi Nishi, focused on understanding, preventing, and supporting around microaggressions. When it comes to microagressions, Impact?matters more than?intent: although microaggressions are not typically intended to inflict harm, they have negative impacts that are particularly harmful given their frequency and pervasiveness. For those with multiple marginalized identities who experience compounded microaggressions, Dr. Nishi suggests having a strategy or a planned response for defusing. For example, you might share your experience with someone you trust, or name the assumption you hear someone making, e.g., “Why do you seem surprised that my English is good?”

It's First-Generation College Celebration Day! This year, CSU is celebrating the 40th anniversary of our programs supporting first-gen students. Throughout the next 8 months, the #CSUSystem will be releasing First Degree, a new documentary series that illuminates the personal and academic journeys of first-gen students as they pursue higher education and its benefits. Watch the first two episodes now: https://lnkd.in/dy54HsXE
“Today, first-generation students are the most rapidly growing student demographic. They are the future of higher education. And they deserve access to whatever campus best suits their dreams – including the world’s finest research universities. If Lincoln could see these students, the dependents of the Morrill Act, I think he’d be proud. And I think he’d tell us we have more work to do.” - #CSUSystem Chancellor Dr. Tony Frank Today is #FirstGenerationCollegeCelebrationDay, and all across the CSU System we have success stories of first-generation students blazing a path for themselves and their families. At Colorado State University in Fort Collins, about 25% of the student population is first-generation. At Colorado State University Pueblo, nearly half the students are first-gen. Colorado State University Global, our online university, has a strong first-generation focus that includes working adults and active-duty military personnel. Though it’s true we might have more work to do,? the entire #CSUSystem is committed to getting it done. Happy First Generation College Celebration Day ?? You can watch the first two episodes of “First Degree” now at csusystem.edu/first-degree
