This is Jackie, one of our Lombard clinicians. As a UIC MSW graduate, she obtained hands-on experience working alongside children and adolescents. Her approach stems from experience with cognitive behavioral therapy, multisystemic therapy, and play therapy. Burnout is more than just feeling tired; it's a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. It can happen when we’re overwhelmed by work, caregiving responsibilities, and/or personal challenges, and it can affect anyone. Here are some signs of burnout to watch for: chronic fatigue and exhaustion, feeling disengaged or detached from work or relationships, increased irritability or feelings of helplessness, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, and physical symptoms like headaches or digestive issues. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s important to acknowledge the impact stress is having on your well-being. Here’s what you can do: set realistic goals and break tasks into smaller/manageable steps, prioritize rest and recharge (sleep, relax, and take breaks!), set boundaries, seek support from loved ones or a mental health professional, and practice relaxation techniques (mindfulness, breathing, etc.). You deserve balance and time for yourself. Taking small steps toward self-care can make a world of difference.
