"Creativity takes courage." - Henri Matisse The brave young artists at our group home love to share such a creative array of interests — from Buckeye art to bracelet-making … splatter-painted jewelry boxes to cookie kits … iron-on patches to bottle crafting … elaborate paper snowflakes to evergreens in water color. Art teacher Debby Campbell shares many cups of cocoa with the trafficked teens we serve here … and in our cozy on-site art studio, she helps our youth dream up their next project … not as art therapy per se, but as an enjoyable experience that might also help with emotional regulation and expression. Gracehaven was recently interviewed by Spectrum News 1 Ohio reporter Jenna Jordan who writes: The National Human Trafficking Hotline reports it received more than 800 signals from people in Ohio in 2023, the fifth most calls in the nation. “The victim themselves, a lot of times, is confused by what’s happening to them,” said Jennifer Taber. “They think they’re a part of it. They’re told they’re a part of it.” Taber is the director of Gracehaven, a nonprofit that helps people escape the situation she says anyone can fall victim to. She said traffickers prey upon vulnerabilities we all have. “They mimic the things that we really do need as human beings,” she said. “Like, we need connection, we need people to have us belong and accept us.” Taber connected with State Sen. Hearcel Craig, D – Columbus, at the Statehouse Wednesday to share information about her organization and the need for legislative leaders to help combat the issue. “We need to be working alongside, not dictating, but working alongside those that are doing the work, the important work and learning from them,” Craig said. “How we can be helpful and involved.” “Once people see it and recognize it, you can't unsee it,” said Kirsti Mouncey, president and CEO of the Collaborative to End Human Trafficking. “So, once we have people onboard as advocates and people who recognize it, then we can start doing things about it.” https://lnkd.in/eiPxfG6Z

Yesterday, our team was counted among the 250 advocates, survivors, and leaders who gathered at the Ohio Statehouse for Human Trafficking Prevention Day. We met with lawmakers from all over the state and spoke with Spectrum News 1 Ohio about 1) the need to protect those most vulnerable to human trafficking (the children we serve) and 2) equipping those (educators) who often find themselves on the front lines of this fight. Together with event organizer Collaborative to End Human Trafficking and other such organizations, we are: ? partnering to prevent trafficking from happening in the first place; ? increasing awareness in our communities; ? empowering youth; and ? helping child sex- and labor-trafficking survivors to thrive with dignity. “Every conversation, every policy change, and every effort to support survivors brings us closer to ending this public health crisis. Let’s make an impact together.” - #collaborativetoendHT #Gracehaven #endchildtrafficking #endchildsextrafficking #humantraffickingawareness #HumanTraffickingPreventionMonth #OhioAgainstTrafficking #EndHumanTrafficking #GracehavenSummit2025

What does it mean when a Gracehaven resident is ready to “graduate” from our group home? For one of our teens who recently celebrated her departure from our program, it meant that she had demonstrated personal progress to the point that she could safely transition back into the community. She embodies our mission to empower youth and to help trafficking survivors thrive with dignity in a renewed life. Emotionally and interpersonally, this youth showed significant change in her mindset that will allow her to live with a new level of stability. You can read the full story about this young lady’s transformation on our website here: https://buff.ly/4h3tjND Thank you for your partnership in making this one teen’s recent success story a reality for so many more boys and girls we have the privilege of serving together, during National Human Trafficking Awareness Month and throughout the year! #Gracehaven #endchildsextrafficking #humantraffickingawareness #HumanTraffickingPreventionMonth #endhumantrafficking #endchildtrafficking #empoweringyouth
