?? FEATURE FRIDAY ?? Hey there, I’m Rachel! I’m the military wife behind Home Base Maps. As a military family, we know what its like to move from city to city. Home Base Maps was born out of a desire to commemorate all the places we’ve called home with simple, beautiful maps. My husband (the tech guy in our family) uses mapping software to create the layouts for each map. I use my graphic design day job to refine the layouts, add color and text, and make them into the final product. We then print and package each map in our home studio. While this is a day that I never dreamed of having to celebrate, happy alive day, dad! For those who don't know what an alive day is, it is often viewed as a day where a catastrophic injury happened to a service member - leaving them feeling the wounds of war. On November 20, 2011, my mom got the unimaginable phone call informing her that my dad was injured while serving in Afghanistan. He had stepped on an IED. It is a miracle that he is still alive to this day and we are thankful to be able to celebrate this special day with him! Here's to 13 years of dealing feeling the impacts of war in every second, and here's to many more ?? While I never dreamed of spending this day apart from you, here we are. I am beyond grateful for your leadership of service and sacrifice in my life and in my career. I know you have been through a lot in the last 13 years as a result, but I know you also couldn't be more proud of me for following in your footsteps. Love you dad! ?? NEW EPISODE ?? Daniel grew up in the military life as a Navy B.R.A.T. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1996, ultimately serving as a Psychological Operations Specialist. In 2011, Daniel was severely injured by an IED in Afghanistan, resulting in the amputation of his right leg and other life-changing injuries. Now living in Cape Coral, Florida, Daniel finds healing through quilting and enjoys life with his wife and two daughters, Gracie and Kaylee.
