We’ve all heard an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but did you know grapes will keep the gastroenterologist even farther away. GR8PE by Stil-Bène is preparing for a January launch of a dietary supplement that is designed to improve #gastrointestinal #health, especially for individuals with compromised digestive systems. Research by Cornell University professor Elad Tako, the firm’s chief scientific officer, shows GR8PE by Stil-Bène can aid in repair of the lining of the intestine, helping the body absorb nutrients more efficiently. “For people with an underlying medical condition, either due to diet or age, over time the lining of the intestine starts to deteriorate,” said John Zuccarello, chief innovative officer for the firm. “No matter how many vitamins or probiotics you take, there’s only so much the body can absorb, because everything is absorbed into your bloodstream through the lining of the intestine. So, when the lining of the intestine is damaged, you can’t get as much in; the door’s not wide enough.” Enter the nutritional benefits of #grape #pomace, the seeds and skins discarded during grape processing. "The compounds that are in these grape seeds and skins actually repair the wall,” Zuccarello said. “By repairing the wall, they allow those other things to enter into the bloodstream much more quickly. These compounds are also found in the skins of apples but in much higher concentration in grapes. From Tako’s research, they've created their supplement in 3 flavors: grape, berry and what they call original, making it easy to add to a host of everyday foods, from coffee and tea to yogurt and oatmeal. Zuccarello, Tako and company CEO Amber Adams have already sold Grow-NY judges on their product. GR8APE by Stil-Bène is one of 20 finalists in the annual food and ag competition. Tako had spent close to 10 years researching the benefits of grape pomace. About 18 months ago was introduced to Adams and Zuccarello. “He was interested in the French paradox,” Adams said. “French people have higher consumptions of wine but lower risk of other many other diseases, like cardiovascular, high blood pressure, things of that nature, so he started looking into that. “He discovered these compounds in grapes called #stilbenes. These compounds exist in many types of fruit but are in very high concentration in grapes, in particular in the skins and seeds, which is the part of the grape that gets thrown away in wine-making or when they press for grape juice.” Now, rather than tossing some of the healthiest parts of the grape into a landfill, Stil-Bène is creating a beneficial product — and helping the environment.
