DT Institute's CEO Pia Rice Wanek facilitated an important and timely discussion organized by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs focused on?#HumanitarianAid in Conflict. The event offered a chance to explore the complicated reality facing humanitarian workers around the world today, and offered a primer on the international law framework that underscores humanitarian action. Insights from most if not all of the major global crises in the past two decades included an exploration of how difficult it is to secure and maintain access to those affected by crises – including working alongside sanctioned groups. The panelists Nathaniel Raymond and Rebecca Wolfe offered provocative commentary on current events of relevance to both “baby” aid workers, as Nathaniel described, and for governments and international organizations alike.?Their expertise across the humanitarian, development, conflict studies, and human rights disciplines—and insightful questions from participants in the room – neatly aligned in a fast-paced, content-rich dialogue that offered new perspectives on how to grapple with impartiality and appropriate action in contested, conflict environments such as Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Northern Nigeria.
