Representatives of the members of GOWRS Limited gathered together last week for their second in-person meeting of 2024. Following our visit to New Orleans for the IOSC in May, we met in Lima, Peru. Many thanks go to our hosts, Aiuká, especially Valeria Ruoppolo, Vivi Barquette and Brigida Gandini who worked tirelessly to arrange everything for us and to the rest of the Aiuká team for their assistance. We discussed many aspects of operationalizing our oiled wildlife assessment service and participated in a Lima-based drill exercise which resembled the 2022 oil spill in that same location. We had a busy week of meetings, including Steering Group discussions and working group meetings that enabled them to progress with their projects. The exercise, designed as a training event, provided an opportunity to develop skills for our Assessment Team participants. The exercise simulated a spill off the coast of Lima, threatening local marine habitats. The exercise ran through our standard operating procedure, from the initial notification from OSRL, the field and facility assessment, to the report writing and debrief. The field assessment included a boat trip to four islands off Lima to determine which wildlife species were present and what actions could be taken in the event of a spill, while the facility assessment allowed us to visit the new base of operations for Aiuká Consultoria em Solu??es Ambientaisá as well as the CLEAN PACIFIC facilities. Thanks again to Vivi, Sascha and the team at Aiuka for arranging an excellent exercise and to Erick Monge and all at Clean Pacific for hosting us at your base.? And thanks again to all at Aiuká for arranging and coordinating the meeting.

The Global Oiled Wildlife Response System (GOWRS) works virtually year round, but twice a year, representatives from the 10 institutions meet in person to discuss the group's main focus areas and best practices in preparedness and response for oiled wildlife. Last week, the GOWRS in-person meeting was held in New Orleans, in the USA, and included a field exercise, simulating an accident on the Mississippi River. The GOWRS assessment team was activated, assessing access, local facilities, and local wildlife identification. The IMT specialist worked on recommendations to support decisions. Many thanks to those at the Audubon facility Audubon Nature Institute who allowed us to use their facility for the exercise!
