Welcome Rachel Miller to GCC!
After 18 years in the archive and library world, I have moved on to a new professional chapter in which I am focusing on the climate crisis. Over the years I have been proud to play a role in preserving the past, surrounded by so many passionate and supportive mentors and colleagues, but I feel most compelled now to play a role in preserving the present and future. I’m excited to announce I have started at Gowanus Canal Conservancy in Brooklyn as Development Director, building on fundraising skills I developed at the Center for Jewish History. Gowanus Canal Conservancy’s vision is deeply inspiring: Through GCC’s work caring and advocating for the environment, we will see a Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn adapted to the impacts of climate change with a healthy urban forest; accessible, well-maintained public waterfronts, parks and open space; robust green and grey infrastructure to manage flooding, sewage and storm surge; and a clean, biodiverse waterway, with restored salt marsh, coastal plant communities and abundant wildlife. The people who live, work and learn in the community will have equitable access to neighborhood green space and the waterway, particularly public housing residents, people from historically marginalized communities, and people at disproportionate risk from climate change. They will have access to local green jobs and opportunities and will be empowered to make positive environmental change in the neighborhood and city through stewardship, education and advocacy. Through this work, the Gowanus neighborhood will become a successful model for urban climate resilience and environmental justice across the city. Grateful to the many folks who cheered me on and helped me find my way during this transition — including all my Terra.do Climate Change: Learning for Action classmates, Katy Shields, Eric Li, Erica Neiges, Jennifer Ellis, Jessica Wilson, many CJH colleagues, as well as the new GCC colleagues who have warmly welcomed me into their community over the past week.

As 2024 winds down, we’re so grateful to everyone who has joined us in stewardship of the Gowanus neighborhood this year — thank you to all our volunteers, educators, community partners, advocates, environmental stewards, youth, elected officials, agency partners and supporters who have made this work possible. We hope you’ll show your support for our mission-driven work by making a contribution today, on #GivingTuesday. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and Board, each dollar between now and the end of the year will be tripled: https://lnkd.in/eFMDWMxi A gift to GCC is an investment in the future of the Gowanus neighborhood as we work to build an equitable, thriving and resilient urban ecosystem in Gowanus — its waterway, urban forest, parks and open space — through education, stewardship, and advocacy that empower our community.
