To kickstart data-driven citywide transformations, our coaches visit every city the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance, connecting with mayors and their teams to build data strategies that improve data use across government workforces and directly impact resident lives. In City of Richmond, California mayor Eduardo Martinez and his team are eager to use data to improve communication with residents and make decisions that truly reflect community needs. Soon, the city will release its tailored strategy for bringing this effort to life. #dataforgood #datadriven

In Athens-Clarke County, GA, Mayor Kelly Girtz and his team are using their time in the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance to accelerate the timeline between identifying community needs and delivering crucial services. Like all cities in the Alliance, with the support of #GovEx coaches and proven guidelines, Athens-Clarke County will develop a citywide data strategy to support this work across their workforce. "As a policy maker, we want access to information quickly. It helps [us] know if the job got done, and if there is a need for more dollars next year,” says Mayor Girtz.

Our political landscape changed on Nov. 5. Many of our citizens feel disoriented, untethered. Others, to be sure, feel empowered. We need to find our balance. A place to start – away from the convulsions of national politics – is in our cities. America’s urban centers, suburbs, towns, and villages are where the local hand of government touches and affects daily lives. Mayors are less ideological, less partisan than their political brethren on the national stage. Their issues – safe streets, disaster response, affordable housing – require innovation, not party labels. Our institutions – governmental and civic – must continue to nurture that spirit. We know we will have a new administration on Jan. 21. New presidents have new agendas. As a nation, we will face multiple distractions. But we must continue to strengthen the ability of cities to chart their own course. Our national politics can be loud, even frightening. But in our neighborhoods, on our local streets, and through our city halls, we can continue to find common purpose. Mayors don’t give up in divided times; they hunker down and deliver.
