Hats off to the City of Green Bay on the release of its citywide data strategy! The “Connect Green Bay” strategy comes out of Mayor Eric Genrich and his team’s work as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance. The plan establishes new public dashboards and reports to provide residents with insights into city operations, improve public services, and enhance community well-being. “This plan sets the City on a journey for our community that is better connected to the City’s strategic goals and whose progress is more clearly defined by data-informed successes.” - Mayor Genrich. In 2024, more cities than ever were using citywide data strategies and integrating Generative AI into everyday governance—strengthening crisis response, improving operations, and driving impact. AI is no longer a futuristic idea. It’s a must-have for cities looking to optimize public services and turn data into action. In our latest episode of the GovEx Data Points podcast, former GovEx Executive Director Amy Edwards Holmes reflects on the rapid growth of data-driven leadership in unpredictable times. In July, GovEx participated in a roundtable on making Generative AI and open government data useful for all–citizens, businesses, policymakers, and more. Out of this roundtable comes the “Democratizing Government Data with GenAI: Issues and Opportunities” report from the Center for Open Data Enterprise. Recommendations include emphasizing data quality, developing regulatory frameworks, and ensuring human capacity to engage with and lead #AI work. Check out the full report for all 12 recommendations as well as case studies from mission driven orgs and governments of all levels. #dataforgood #datadriven

For the cities we work with, putting data to work for the public good is an ongoing journey. Since joining the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance in 2023, the City of Charlotte has deepened its commitment to data excellence—earning What Works Cities Gold certification along the way! Building on this momentum, last week, Charlotte hosted its first-ever Data & Analytics conference, where they welcomed back City Data Alliance coach, GovEx’s Practice Manager Alexx (Alcorn) Baerwald Simard, to share insights on building a data-driven city. The event also marked the launch of Charlotte’s Data Community of Practice, strengthening its local network of data leaders! #citydataalliance #dataforgood #datadriven

Great things are happening in City of New Bedford as Mayor Mitchell and team work to release a citywide data strategy as part of their efforts in the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance. Our coaches are proud to support this work in nearly two dozen cities who joined the alliance last spring. #datadriven #dataforgood
Excerpt from Mayor Mitchell's State of the City speech on data management and the City's partnership with Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance. "How we manage data is now at the center of how we manage city government. With the help of Bloomberg Cities, we’re in the midst of a multi-year effort to install new software across multiple departments that will make data far more accessible and easier to manage.?We just hired the City’s first Director of Data Management, Christina Cotsoridis, who helped launch the city’s original performance management system.?Her job is to help bring these systems online, enable department heads to make sound decisions based on their data, and ensure that the city is using artificial intelligence applications effectively and appropriately.??And thanks to our work with Bloomberg Philanthropies and John Hopkins University, in the coming months, we will release the City’s first data strategy, which will guide our work in this area for the next several years." Many thanks to our wonderful Bloomberg Harvard City Fellow, Aathira Pillai, and coaches Simi Aliu and Alexx (Alcorn) Baerwald Simard for their continued support in this effort! #newbedford #data #bloombergharvard #datamanagement #performancemanagement

As more governments put #AI to work, it is increasingly important they remain focused on deploying tools fairly and with equity in mind. Values Sensitive Design (VSD) is one way governments can be sure to do this. In the latest edition of our City AI Connection blog series, GovEx Research and Analytics team members Heather Bree and Maeve Mulholland walk us through how governments can use VSD to balance the needs of their communities with the possibilities of AI. Read their take: https://lnkd.in/eDgkwM-q
