Cities shouldn’t navigate the AI revolution on their own. City AI Connect Community Manager Meg Burke writes about how by collaborating and sharing in the experience of adopting AI, cities can exchange valuable lessons, avoid needlessly recreating the same solutions, and chart a path forward.?

Congratulations to GovEx's Heather Bree and Sara Bertran de Lis, PhD, and former GovEx staffer Melanie Veneron for their work on the BREATHE Center's Lung Health Dashboard, which was just long-listed for for the Information is Beautiful Awards. The dashboard tells the story of high asthma rates in Baltimore with evocative, interactive, clear visuals that convey both the science of the crisis and the human impact. https://lnkd.in/eszai9Sp

Congratulations to Nairobi City County for launching its work with the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative Data Track. GovEx coaches Vidushani Jayalal and Laurie Mo?se Sears, MPH were thrilled to join Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson and other leaders in City Hall to kick off our collaborative work to help Nairobi leverage data to improve the quality of life for residents. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Last week, San Miguel de Tucumán Mayor Rossana Chahla, announced the upcoming launch of an ambitious citywide data strategy as part of her city’s work in the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance. Mayor Chahla and city leaders have developed this strategy to enhance decision-making, improve public services, and increase transparency. Their plan includes advanced data manager training for municipal employees and establishing a data management office, a best practice used by many cities around the world. The new office, which will launch its website later this month will not only be a resource for employees and city leaders, but also give residents insight into government efforts. "We no longer make intuitive and reactive decisions, but rather rely on projections and achievable metrics," Mayor Chahla said. https://lnkd.in/eAZfRr3S

Our friends at Barrett and Greene Inc. have published an insightful article about the growing reliance on #AI in research and writing. In the article, #GovEx Chief of Staff Rudy de Leon Dinglas, Ph.D. and Manager for Data Practices Kel W. discuss the importance of data management strategies in the age of AI. ??
In a new B&G Report "Data Garbage In -- Data Garbage Out" Barrett and Greene Inc. voice their concerns about the growing number of practitioners and academics who rely on artificial intelligence as the only source they need in researching and writing about a host of topics. The problem, of course, is that with alarming frequency the facile answers AI technology pits out are just wrong or incomplete. "The basic problem is this," they write, "as a growing number of people rely on AI to get the information they need, their attention is being diverted from the basics of data management. With so many government officials focused on artificial intelligence, the critical issue of data quality is getting less attention." As Rudy de Leon Dinglas, Ph.D. de Leon Dinglas, Chief of Staff of the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University told them, “I don’t think we should turn our back on basic data management strategies, because they’re very foundational. AI is here, but we cannot turn our backs on making sure that we’re shoring up the infrastructure about data strategy and data policy.” Barrett and Greene are hardly alone in their concerns. According to the MIT Sloan School of Management, “AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini have been found to provide users with fabricated data that appears authentic. These inaccuracies are so common that they’ve earned their own moniker; we refer to them as ‘hallucinations’.
