The Friends of Governors Island is an independent nonprofit that works to ensure the Island’s continued growth and accessibility as a vibrant public resource. As the designated fundraising partner of the Trust for Governors Island and the National Park Service, the Friends stewards the Island’s green spaces, enhances the visitor experience and builds a community dedicated to the Island’s future. The Friends of Governors Island was founded in 1995 as the Governors Island Alliance to advocate for the return of Governors Island to the people of New York. The organization’s goal of redeveloping the former military base as a great civic space was the basis for the 2003 transfer of the Island from the Federal Government to New York and the National Park Service. The Governors Island Alliance became an independent nonprofit in late 2014 and changed its name to the Friends of Governors Island in 2016. The Friends invites you to lend your voice, time and financial contributions to ensure that Governors Island remains a vibrant shared space for all.

We're thrilled to share some exciting news: effective November 1, 2024, The Friends of Governors Island will become the Governors Island Foundation. For more than 20 years, the Friends of Governors Island (formerly Governors Island Alliance) has been instrumental in advocating for and nurturing the Island’s growth as a cherished public destination for New Yorkers. As we con-tin-ue to ful-fill our mis-sion and work towards real-iz-ing the Island’s full poten-tial, we have set ambi-tious goals to: ?? Enhance our park ?? Expand our arts and cul-ture pro-grams ?? Estab-lish a pre-mier cen-ter for research and edu-ca-tion on cli-mate change ?? Advance projects that boost vis-i-tor ameni-ties and his-toric preser-va-tion As the ded-i-cat-ed fundrais-ing part-ner to the Trust for Governors Island, the Gov-er-nors Island Foun-da-tion will sup-port these goals by focus-ing on secur-ing phil-an-thropic sup-port to fur-ther strength-en the Island as a vibrant resource for all New York-ers. Under this new struc-ture, we'll work more close-ly than ever to sus-tain our mis-sion and programs. The Friends of Governors Island is thankful for our Park Partners, including this a-maze-ing group from Neuberger Berman!? ? This awesome team removed a whopping 100 cubic feet of invasive plants from the Liggett Terrace hedge maze, allowing visitors to explore this Island favorite and creating space for native plants such as little bluestem and milkweed to grow and thrive! ? Our summer volunteer season is in full swing with Bloomberg Philanthropies! ? Thank you Bloomberg volunteers for your incredible contributions to Governors Island’s green space! This amazing group of dedicated volunteers removed invasive growth from scenic Outlook Hill and cared for over 60 tree rings in picnic spaces surrounding the Island’s Play Lawns. With your support, the Island is beautiful and ready to welcome visitors all season long. ??
