GHSA and General Motors have worked together the past few years to combat distracted driving, a pervasive yet preventable roadway safety concern. We've worked with youth journalists to highlight the issue, given states funding to test innovative distracted driving prevention programs, and raised public awareness - just to name a few of our many activities. At #GHSA2024, as a small token of our appreciation, we gave GM leaders a reminder of some of the ways we've worked together to make our roads safer for everyone. I’m just back from the annual meeting of the?Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) in Indianapolis – and wow – it was so heartening to connect with so many people from across the country working to address traffic safety!??Great presentations by corporations,?nonprofits, law-enforcement agencies, and others about advancements in the field of pedestrian safety and about what's happening with next-generation safety technology. My team and I were inspired to listen to remarks from@Sophie Shulman, deputy administrator of the federal?National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA ?about the #SafeSystems approach to mitigating risks in our?nation’s? transportation system.?We also had the chance to connect with friends and supporters,?including?Jonathan Adkins, Pam Shadel Fischer,?Stacey D. Stewart, MBA , @Lisa Freeman,?Erik Dietz,?and?Alexis Brandl.??I also want to congratulate?Barbara Rooney?for being a stellar chair of GHSA Board of Directors and a loyal friend to Safe Kids Worldwide.??And, of course, a shout out to my esteemed colleague and good friend, David Strickland, who I'm pictured with below. All of us are excited to tackle the work ahead and?ready to team up with everyone involved in meeting this important challenge.

Another fantastic Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) Annual Meeting is in the books! The 2024 Annual Meeting in Indianapolis was extra special for me as it was my third and last as the GHSA Executive Board Chair. The membership honored me with a beautiful award during our Member Business Meeting, a moment etched in my heart forever. ?? Thank you to Jonathan Adkins and the entire GHSA staff for their extraordinary work to make this conference one of the best yet. To my fellow Board Members (past and present), I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and certain that GHSA will continue to lead and collaborate across the system on our collective path to zero roadway deaths. I was also pleased to have some members of my team at the California Office of Traffic Safety attend, present, or moderate workshops. I’ve returned home full of gratitude for all the advocates and traffic safety partners working tirelessly to save lives. We must take new and bold action, advance powerful new countermeasures in post-crash care, and use data tools that allow us to be proactive in our efforts. Join the Ford Driving Skills for Life program for a driver training clinic for newly licensed and permitted drivers at Manheim Cincinnati on Sept. 28 or 29. This half-day clinic will help teens improve their skills in hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed, and space management, braking and stopping distances, reaction time and how to avoid the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. New this year: a Safety in Mobility module with scooters and pedestrian/cycling safety info. This is a FREE program provided by Ford Philanthropy and GHSA. It was a privilege to attend the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) annual meeting in Indianapolis this week and represent Waymo on a panel about the ways technology can be leveraged to enhance road safety and save lives. It was wonderful reconnecting with friends in the industry and meeting so many new faces. I leave GHSA feeling inspired by the incredible professionals around the country who are dedicated to making our roads safer for all. By working together and embracing the potential of technology, I am confident we can drive meaningful change. I learned a lot at this year's Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) Annual Meeting. We talked about tech, community engagement, federal rulemaking, and anything else you could imagine that might help improve traffic safety. The most profound thing I heard all week came in a casual conversation with my friend Maura Fitzgerald. We were talking about reaching people who come from communities that are often underserved and overrepresented in our crash data. She said - "I made a friend." We're trying to tackle a big problem and it can be easy to be overwhelmed by all the data, the countermeasures, and the scale of our challenge but the first step is simple - make a friend. Transportation, at its core, is about connection - connecting to work and school, connecting to goods and services, and most importantly - connecting to people. When we connect to each other, we can share ideas and find common ground. We can lift each other up when it gets hard. We can learn new things that help us all do better! We've got a lot of work to do and we can't do it alone. Make a friend. #GHSA2024
