Amazing seeing President Biden in Amazonas! Loved this quote from his remarks: “Forests and national wonders are the heart and soul of the world. They united us, inspire us, make us proud of our countries and our heritage. They are the bridge to our past and to our future… Let’s preserve this sacred place… for the benefit of humanity.” Kudos ?? to the ???? and ???? teams for making this happen, and for the incredible work to keep moving forward with big announcements and partnerships. The Governors' Climate & Forests Task Force, including our member states in Brazil - like Amazonas! - have been bringing forward jurisdictional strategies and cross-border partnerships to build a #NewForestEconomy for many years, including with USAID and leaders across administrations. We look forward to continuing to partner and to support the actions and solutions of our member states and Indigenous and local communities! Earlier today, together with the Architecture for REDD+ Transactions (ART), Pronatura Sur A.C., #ABEMA, and Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado Boulder, we hosted an official side event #COP29. Our event, “New Forest Economies: Subnational Government Strategies, REDD+ & Local Engagement,” highlighted the important roles Governors, States, and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities have in leading the fight against the climate crisis and building #newforesteconomies that will truly benefit communities and reduce deforestation. On the panel’s first section, Governors Clécio Luis (Amapá, Brazil) and Marcos Rocha (Rond?nia, Brazil), as well as Secretary of Environment Leonardo das Neves Carvalho (Acre, Brazil) discussed complex challenges at the territorial level of ensuring long-term protection of #tropicalforests, including the devastating #fires in the Amazon.?Secretary of Indigenous Peoples of Acre, Brazil, Francisca Oliveira, spoke of the challenges and needs of Indigenous Peoples and communities, and opportunities for building a new forest economy. Silvia Llamas (GCFTF Mexico), Sebastián Gradilla-Hernández (Tecnológico de Monterrey, México) and Dr. Michael Glantz (Consortium for Capacity Building. INSTAAR / University of Colorado, Boulder) shared perspectives from civil society and academia as strategic allies for #subnational governments and communities in building this new forest economy. GCFTF Brazil Director, Carlos E. Aragon Castillo, served as the panel moderator. As various GCF Task Force member jurisdictions, Indigenous and local community partners, and other partners prepare for discussions #COP29, the work on the ground continues. #PandoBolivia recently finalized its Land Use Plan (Plan de Uso de Suelos, PLUS) earlier this week after 28 years of work! ?? As one of the newest members of the Governors' Climate & Forests Task Force, Pando is demonstrating why #subnationalaction is so critical. This plan will serve to help the department protect its natural resources ??, support community livelihoods ??, and open up climate finance??opportunities for a #NewForestEconomy. Last week, the Governors' Climate & Forests Task Force wrapped up our 14th Annual Meeting in Ucayali, Peru. The week was an incredibly full, substantive, and dynamic series of #exchanges, #partnerships, and #fieldvisits with friends and colleagues from across the globe and across the spectrum of efforts to protect forests, drive sustainable economic development, and create stronger partnerships between subnational governments and Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Our overall theme was the co-creation of a #NewForestEconomy that will benefit #people, #forests, and the #climate - based on the idea that subnational governments, Indigenous Peoples, and communities understand their realities, challenges, and solutions best, and that we must all work together to channel financing mechanisms to support those efforts. A few highlights: ?? Nearly 1,000 people participated throughout the week, in particular during our first full-day Indigenous Peoples summit on Tuesday, Oct. 8 ?? We launched our Blueprint for the New Forest Economy! ?? We welcomed 5 new observer jurisdictions into the network, and two new Indigenous organizations into our Global Committee of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities ?? A new agreement between Peruvian regional governments and the national government to curb illegal logging ?? A new alliance across our Bolivian member jurisdictions, and a formal partnership between Ecuadorian provinces and Indigenous nations for protected area management ?? Participants engaged in 7 different #deepdive field visits to better understand challenges and opportunities in creating more sustainable supply chains, including for cacao, aguaje, camu camu, palm oil, ecotourism, and more...
