The Biden Administration proposed a rule that requires coverage of semaglutide for millions more Americans. The rule stems from a new interpretation of current law that follows medical consensus of treating obesity as a disease. Only 13 state Medicaid programs currently cover GLP-1 agonists, and about 22% of Medicare patients have been diagnosed with obesity. A CMS spokesperson said the change, to go into effect in April 2025, will increase Medicare costs by $25 billion over 10 years, in addition to adding $11 billion in federal Medicaid costs and $4 billion in state costs. Due to the expense, we think it is unlikely the incoming Trump Administration will keep the rule, but eliminating it poses a financial and political challenge. https://lnkd.in/e_DEEXNg

A thought-provoking Friday read: "What could Trump mean for the business of health? Scenarios for an RFK Jr. HHS" by Matthew Herper at STAT News. Interestingly, Kennedy might lower or weaken FDA evidentiary requirements for innovations with roots in the wellness industry like psychedelics, hyperbaric therapies, nutraceuticals, or "clean" foods while raising evidentiary standards for established technologies, like vaccines and therapeutics. In addition, changing the standard user fee system at FDA might come, but it will take significant time in getting to actual execution. Medicare Advantage is here to stay as the CMS Administrator nominee Mehmet Oz is a rumored supporter, but Medicare billing procedure changes may come as a movement grows to disassociate the process from the American Medical Association. https://lnkd.in/geTVd92q

Great job to the Northeast Ohio Flight Information Exchange (NEOFIX) team, Stuart C Mendel and Howard Thompson, testifying on HB77, regarding drones and setting some much needed ground rules for drone usage, before the Senate Transportation Committee today. Rep. Colonel Bernie "Bunyan" Willis and his team have worked very hard on this critical piece of legislation and we are so thankful for that leadership. Ohio is the birthplace of aviation and we have set ourselves up to the future of aviation in unmanned ariel systems with legislation like this.

Today, we gathered at the Ohio Statehouse for a crucial press conference to raise awareness about the importance of perinatal mental health, an issue that affects millions of families but is often overlooked. Perinatal mental health — including mental health during pregnancy and the first year postpartum — is a critical aspect of overall maternal and child health. Conditions like postpartum depression and anxiety can affect anyone and with proper support these challenges can be managed. We?must?pass?HCR16?by the end of the year to raise awareness of perinatal mental health and begin to support resources and treatment for moms.
