15 budgets. You can break down my 15 years as a GC into 15 budgets. It's the least interesting way to think of the role...until you consider the opportunities each budget season provides: -You get the undivided attention of the rest of the execs -- a chance to explain your functions and see how they best fit into the strategic and tactical imperatives of the company; -You get a clearer picture of how your functions are viewed by the rest of the execs; and -You get to show that you're numerate (hopefully). Many of us in legal are spreadsheet avoidant. Budget season is no time for that. One of the most difficult tasks during budget season is quantifying the upside for the less obvious functions within Legal. Everyone understands litigation costs and deal costs, but when it comes to regulatory, governance and compliance functions, how do you make a case that every dollar spent generates far more than a dollar in value to the company? And how do you outlook the internal demand for your team's services in a rapidly changing regulatory environment? Is outside counsel always the overflow valve? Is that cost-effective? At the annual Governance Intelligence conference earlier this month, we had a great panel discussion on planning for new disclosure requirements, coincidentally, during budget season. What are you doing to make sure your team (and your budget) is ready for whatever comes next out of Washington, Brussels, and everywhere else? Shout out to my fellow panelists for a great job: Steven Wade Adriana Mitchell Brian Short Jeffrey M. Taylor

Sorry, still buzzing from my birthday last week :) Our “small but mighty” ESG Strategy & Reporting team won Best ESG Reporting — Large Cap at the 2024 Corporate Governance Awards ?? This means a lot to me because I joined the team as an intern over three years ago and have been fortunate to witness the growth and evolution of our Corporate ESG program basically since inception. This award really is a testament to the collaborative nature of the various internal functions and teams at Nasdaq who contribute to our reporting initiatives and who all truly embody the #OneNasdaq culture. We also celebrated our Office of Corporate Secretary (OCS) who won Governance Team of the Year and Best Director Training and Education ???? Serving as the lead for all Governance-related ESG disclosures, I’ve had the special privilege to work closely with, and learn from, our OCS over the last few years. I couldn’t be more proud of them, our team, and the many other Nasdaq colleagues who support our ESG reporting and Governance efforts. ?????? #sustainability #esg #corporategovernance #nasdaq
