We strongly believe in the vast benefits of youth work-based learning and internships/apprenticeships. But instead of continuing to hear that from us, we'd like to share the perspective of employers on these topics. American Student Assistance (ASA) is a national nonprofit focused on preparing students for their futures and changing the learning curve about careers. In a recent report, the ASA surveyed 500 employers of various sizes to understand their views on internships and WBL opportunities. Here are some of the statistics that stood out: - 86% of respondents said that high school interns strengthened their industry pipeline as a whole - 92% of respondents said that providing these opportunities allowed them to meaningfully give back to the community - The two main challenges that these organizations had when initially starting their internship programs were determining which work was best suited for the interns and attracting qualified interns. These challenges are where GoPursue comes in - we close the gap and help facilitate the process of strengthening an organization's industry pipeline. Check out the link for more information about the report!

interact > transact A few days ago, I met Kathryn at a VC in DC event during DC Startup & Tech Week (Formerly DC Startup Week). We connected over how bad most GenAI tools are at representing people of color (v bad, tbh). A day later, I learned more about her and what she's building to help high schoolers figure out their career path at GoPursue through a Springboard Enterprises Dolphin Tank event at My Founder's Keeper. Washington, DC is a top 10 venture ecosystem, with >$1bn invested in DC startups from Q2 2023-Q1 2024 (2.7% of all VC funding). As big as we are, we're small enough to enable serendipity. Everyone in the ecosystem gets to see each other semi-regularly through events hosted by orgs like VC in DC, the The Agora Initiative DC, BLCK VC, Angel Squad and Revolution. Startup building is a set of funnels, whether you're trying to acquire customers, talent or capital. When time is tight, we often opt for bottom-of-the-funnel product marketing (here's what I'm building!) when more often, making the person you're talking to want to learn more about you and what you do is the best move. Play the long game. Interact > transact. Thank you for the great conversation Kathryn and congrats on all of your progress. And startup/VC friends, we hope to see you for DC Startup and Tech Week next year!

First time for everything I had a blast at DC Startup & Tech Week (Formerly DC Startup Week), I was asked to speak on a panel "Build a rock solid infrastructure, systems and operations before scaling your early stage startup". Christina D. Lynch, EA, MPS, PHR, SHRM-CP Karen Gordon, Christopher C. King were brilliant fellow panelists and contributed to some lively discussion (really, about operations). This is DMV's largest startup & tech conference with over 300 speakers and 150 events in one week. I was thrilled to be part of this event and the panel. Thank you to Darius Clair of Techstars Washington DC for doing a great job of organizing the panel and moderating.
