Building champions for life. There wasn’t an empty seat in sight at the Darrell Gooden Center as the University of West Florida (UWF) unveiled their newest addition. Named after the first recipient of a UWF athletic scholarship in 1967, the Sandy Sansing Sports Medicine Center represents the University’s commitment to providing student-athletes with the best resources to support their academic and athletic pursuits. The 10,000-square-foot expansion features a hydrotherapy area with two pools, including an underwater treadmill pool equipped with cameras to monitor the athletes’ movements; 12 rehab tables; four taping tables; an exam room; and athletic training offices. “I am thrilled at this facility for a million reasons. First of all, it turned out great. And it came in on time and on budget – all those things that you look for. It’s also a real showpiece,” said UWF President Martha Saunders. GMC provided architecture and civil engineering services on the project, with additional team members including Morette Company, Premier Engineering Group, LLC, Joe DeReuil Associates, LLC and Dell Consulting, LLC. The UWF athletics team also partnered with Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine on the design and necessary spaces for student-athletes and coaches.? ?? Civil + Structural Engineer Media has officially presented their 2024 Yearbook of Engineering Achievement, with GMC’s Dauphin Island East End Beach and Dune Restoration project being a finalist in the Environmental + Sustainability category. Home to beautiful beaches and a wide variety of species that inhabit the sky, sea and sand, the 14-mile-long Dauphin Island is a cherished part of Alabama’s coastline. However, with erosion, hurricanes, and the passage of time threatening these critical environments, GMC was sought out to perform phased restorations to the site that help mitigate erosion and prevent habitat damage. The project’s impact on Dauphin Island is significant and lasting, accomplishing 400 feet wider beaches, 1,200,000 cubic yards of sand placement, 60 acres of beach habitat created, 20 acres of dune habitat created, 12,400 linear feet of sand fence and 691,000 native dune plants of multiple varieties planted. ?? “One life lost is one too many.” This simple, yet firm, belief is one the City of Talladega feels very strongly about when it comes to street safety. From the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and Talladega College campus, to the highly trafficked downtown square and commercial corridors and bypasses, Talladega is a dynamic city in need of a strategy for the wellbeing of the community when it comes to safe travel. To ensure this, the City, in partnership with GMC, has initiated Vision Zero as a means to help eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while also increasing safe, healthy and equitable mobility for all.? The latest meeting held with the AIDB further illustrated the heart of community engagement – inclusivity and equity. Although these principles are always considered when working on a community master plan, Talladega is making an effort to uplift these values even further with AIDB as an integral part of the city makeup. The sky’s the limit ?? Last week, local officials and project team members celebrated the start of construction on the new 5,000-square-foot terminal building for the Jackson County, GA Airport (JCA) – representing phase one of a master plan that will feature an open lobby, collaboration room, outdoor seating, offices and pilot’s lounge. JCA initially retained GMC to create the master plan for the development of a new terminal building and future apron expansion, yielding a multi-phased approach that considered current needs, operational impacts and budget to support the region and determine a viable path forward. The team discussed ways to better serve each individual client, explored key industry trends, and identified new approaches to further enhance their impact on environmental sustainability. Comprised of seasoned environmental scientists, biologists, engineers, geologists, and water resources professionals, our Environmental group takes a comprehensive approach to each project. “Our Environmental department definitely has the “it” factor. Their team is well-rounded professionally and personally,” said GMC Community Planner Bryan King. “The team cares so deeply about what they do – we all knew that – but it was so great to be in their planning meeting to see how committed they are to selfless teamwork and operational expertise. Marking a milestone! Westminster Christian Academy is undertaking a significant project as part of its master plan, including a new 26,000-square-foot lower school building. Lions’ students and staff recently celebrated the final beam placement ceremony – yet another successful milestone as they look forward to filling the school halls next year. All bark, all bite. This fall was an exciting time for The University of Georgia (UGA) softball players and staff, as their state-of-the-art $38.5 million softball training facility was revealed for the first time at Jack Turner Stadium. “This project was born from UGA Athletics’ vision of an elite student-athlete experience that enhances recruiting, streamlines day to day operations and provides state of the art training and recovery spaces,” said Sports Architect Erik Consuegra. “Having worked with the University and Athletics throughout the design and construction of this project has been an absolute pleasure for us at GMC.?We are excited to see this project come to fruition and to observe the part it plays in the future development of the UGA Student Athletes.” GMC provided architecture, interior design, civil engineering and electrical engineering services, with project partners including RW Allen Construction, PES Structural Engineers, Conway & Owen, Koons Environmental Design, Fisher Engineering and Forty Nine Degrees. ??
