Monday, October 14th is recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to reflect on the history and culture of Native communities throughout the United States. This day acknowledges the lasting effects of colonialism on Indigenous groups that continue onto this day. Indigenous Peoples Day celebrates the cultural richness, strength, and ongoing contributions of Native Peoples. As part of our commitment to recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day, it's important to recognize the land in which our Goodwill region operates. Our Goodwill region is located on the ancestral lands of the Monongahela, Shawnee, Osage, Massawomeck, and Calicuas tribes, who owned this land for generations long before our presence here.

Our UPMC Project SEARCH program won this year's mid-Atlantic Emmy award for their video Untapped Talent: Disability & Inclusion! This video features a handful of Project SEARCH interns at UPMC Mercy Hospital, including Gianfranco, Connor, Adam, and Aleena. Congratulations to our Project SEARCH program and its interns for their hard work and compassion! The Project SEARCH Transition-to-Work program is a unique, business-led, one-year employment preparation program for high school students with disabilities. The program takes place entirely at the workplace, where students have fully immersed themselves in the workplace environment. Students are trained in multiple departments within the hospital so they can learn what positions they enjoy and excel at. https://lnkd.in/efVWHG47

52 Weeks of Goodwill, Week 41: Meet Patrick, a former resident at Northside Common Ministries (NCM)! After losing his home in March, Patrick sought NCM's shelter and services to help get him back on his feet. Once at NCM, Patrick got to work! He communicated with our staff about his needs and quickly obtained his important documents. Patrick completed his residency at NCM this past August and has plans to get his own home. Patrick's advice to future NCM residents is to relax and not be overwhelmed about about everything that has to be done right away. Congratulations on your new start, Patrick! This month, Goodwill observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month to bring light to the prevalence of domestic violence and show our support for survivors. Domestic violence can affect individuals across all walks of life, and its impact often extends into the workplace and community. At Goodwill, we are dedicated to fostering a safe and empowering environment through our programs and services that help individuals gain the skills and resources they need to build independent and secure lives. Together, we can raise awareness, support survivors, and take action to help end domestic violence. 52 Weeks of Goodwill, Week 40: Last week, Goodwill held the grand opening of the South Side Opportunity Center! This is the first Opportunity Center opening within our region and will help eliminate transportation barriers many local individuals may face to access the services they need. During the event, we heard remarks from Goodwill Chief Executive Officer Monique McIntosh, Goodwill Board Chairperson John Kraus, and PA State Representative Jessica Benham. We welcomed community partners and guests to tour the new Opportunity Center, learn about Goodwill's services, and shop at the newly renovated South Side Goodwill store. Additionally, Goodwill celebrated the completed renovations of our South Side Goodwill store! Shoppers enjoyed free food, Goodwill swag items, and a live DJ. Goodwill is excited to see our South Side Opportunity Center thrive and provide assistance to even more individuals. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success! #GoodwillSWPA

52 Weeks of Goodwill, Week 39: Meet Glenn, a past resident at Northside Common Ministries (NCM)! Glenn sought NCM's services to focus on finding employment in his field without the stress of being homeless. Northside Common Ministries came at the right time, as Glenn successfully found employment less than three months into his residency. NCM and Goodwill are thrilled to see Glenn's determination pay off! Glenn has advice for future NCM residents: "I came in not knowing what my experience would be. A weight was listed after intake. I had a clean bed, facilities, and great food. The staff was reassuring and encouraging. I would advise future residents to get involved in the programs, volunteer, and take ownership of your life. This September, Goodwill recognizes Hunger Action Month. With one in eight people living with food insecurity in the Greater Pittsburgh Area, raising awareness and taking action is essential to ensure that all individuals have access to food. Goodwill and our affiliate, Northside Common Ministries (NCM), are committed to breaking down barriers so everyone in our community can access essential services for themselves and their families. NCM has been dedicated to meeting the needs of Northside residents for over 40 years. The Northside Food Pantry relies on the help of hundreds of volunteers and other partners to keep operations running smoothly—we couldn't do it without their hard work! The Northside Food Pantry serves more than 1,000 families monthly. Shoppers can find fresh produce, meats, and other household essentials.
