Groundbreaking Goodwill store opens at Elmwood Correctional Campus The Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff Restorative Services Division is proud to announce the launch of an innovative Goodwill store on the Elmwood Correctional Campus in City of Milpitas. This first-of-its-kind initiative empowers women in custody by providing them with real-world retail experience. This transformative program allows women to gain hands-on training in warehousing, inventory, and logistics through a comprehensive three-part training series. Participants not only learn essential skills but also manage the day-to-day operations of the store – an unprecedented opportunity to gain practical knowledge in a supportive environment. “This program uplifts the women in our care, enhancing their wellbeing and restoring their dignity," said Holly Child, PhD, Director of Restorative Services. “For many, this represents hope, healing, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.” One of the most impactful features of the program is that, as women near release, they will have the opportunity to shop for clothing free of charge, helping them reenter society with both new skills and personal confidence. This initiative is more than just retail training—it’s a pathway to future employment and reintegration into the community. “This program was designed to serve someone like me,” one of the program participants said. “I came in with nothing and now I’m able to leave with clothes and confidence.” The Sheriff's Office extends deep appreciation to Goodwill of Silicon Valley and Aramark, both of which are committed, second-chance employers dedicated to empowering incarcerated individuals as they prepare for reentry into the workforce. This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward breaking the cycle of incarceration and creating brighter futures. “We are offering something powerful: opportunity, dignity, and a fresh start,” said Jessica Castello, Goodwill Vice President of Retail. “Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of women who deserve a second chance, and we’re showing that it’s never too late to rebuild, to learn, and to thrive."
