Every day, we’re proud to turn your donations into dollars that fund job development opportunities —and extend the life of goods. So, grab your friends and get thrifty ?? ??
In observance of National Thrift Shop Day, August 17, I joined with my colleagues from Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities to highlight the tremendous impact nonprofits that operate thrift shops make to their local communities. Our joint letter notes that people do not always distinguish between for-profit and nonprofit thrift organizations and might not be aware of how their donations to nonprofit thrift stores are making a positive, generational impact on their communities.?The revenue earned from nonprofit thrift stores is invested back into the local community through support services, such as housing, job training and placement, education, food assistance, veterans’ support, or healthcare.? ? In addition, thrift stores contribute to circularity by extending the life of items that already exist and giving used items a second life. This impact is multiplied by nonprofit thrift organizations that use revenue from sales to deliver life-changing services and opportunities to people in need. Donating to your local nonprofit thrift store is a smart and sustainable way to keep items out of landfills and support community members in need.

John was born with autism and didn’t speak until he was eight years old. For some with autism spectrum disorder, its associated challenges might seem insurmountable, but John never let his obstacles stand in his way. He was determined to shine. Through the support of The Excel Center?, a tuition-free high school for adults operated by Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana, he worked diligently to earn his high school diploma with honors, along with a business certificate. Gary leaned into his faith in God and his former military training in the U.S. Army for the focus, discipline and motivation he needed to create a better life for himself and his family. But after serving in the military, he turned to a life of drugs and crime and eventually ended up in prison. Shaheera?experienced tremendous hardships on her path to achieving her career goals.?Soon after emigrating with her husband from Jordan to Nashville, TN, in 2011, she endured domestic violence, became homeless and struggled to provide for herself and her four children. She also faced challenges adapting to a new culture and learning English as a second language. Then, after hearing about Goodwill of Middle Tennessee’s Google IT Certification program, Shaheera worked tirelessly to make her dream of becoming an IT professional a reality so she could provide a better life for herself and her family.?She earned an apprenticeship with Accenture and now has a full-time position as an application development analyst with Accenture.?Hear her story. #2024GradoftheYear #workforcetraining #powerofwork #Goodwill #Google #Accenture
