After immigrating to the U.S. from the Middle East, Maen Mahfoud was shocked to see the level of food insecurity that permeated the Bay Area, while subsequently, an enormous amount of food went to waste. Knowing the effects of food waste on our climate, and his community belief in food meant to be shared not wasted - he launched Replate, a seamless technology solution for businesses to donate surplus food to nearby nonprofits. In seven years, Maen has grown the company internationally, now operating across the United States and serving hundreds of corporations, including Netflix, Boston Consulting Group, Snap, Dignity Health, SFO, Kaiser, and many others. LAFPC is actively tracking federal policy changes that impact our local food system, advocating for our network, and working to protect efforts that advance food equity in Los Angeles. ?? Win: Farms Together Funding Restored (Source: After a two-week freeze, funding for Farms Together—which connects small farmers with food-insecure communities—was reinstated. While this is a victory, future funding remains uncertain. ?? CUT: $1B+ in Local Food Funding Eliminated USDA terminated key programs that schools and food banks rely on to buy fresh food from small, local farms: ? $660M cut from Local Food for Schools (LFS) – Schools, including LAUSD, lose farm-to-school funding. ? $500M cut from Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) – Food banks lose resources to purchase from local farmers. These programs will end within 60 days, disrupting supply chains and harming food access. ?? AT RISK: SNAP & Medicaid Cuts Could Worsen Food Insecurity Congress is considering deep cuts that would slash food benefits for low-income families and reduce Medicaid access for farmworkers and food system workers.
