Good Machine

Over the past 30 years, nearly half of the world's coral reefs have disappeared, with severe consequences for coastal health and biodiversity. To address this challenge, the venture studio Good Machine has created Reefgen to help restore marine ecosystems that are critical to coastal communities. The result? A remotely operated underwater robot that works 100 times faster and for longer periods of time than human divers. Building Impact with the JLL Foundation This year, we had a record number of companies “graduate” from the portfolio, contributing to a virtuous cycle of return and reinvestment and furthering the mission of sustainable growth! We also hosted the second annual JLL Foundation Pitch Event, showcasing some of the many exciting ventures in the portfolio. ? Coalition for Climate Entrepreneurship (CCE) In January, we were inaugurated as the first U.S. CCE Hub, in partnership with ARM. This fall, alongside the Institute of the Americas, we were honored to be named the CCE Global Hub. Earlier this week, we officially kicked off the Global Hub program, and we’re excited to foster global entrepreneurship next year and beyond. ? Agriculture Value Chains This year we established an exciting new partnership to improve agricultural efficiency, sustainability, and increase the value generated for smallholder farmers. This event offered an incredible opportunity to explore the advancements in Pier 70's ecosystem and urban infrastructure. ?? What an awesome way to kick off TECH WEEK by a16z with JLL Foundation's "Funding Models for Impact" pitch event at Good Machine! From 2021-2, over $2.5 trillion USD in climate finance was pledged, half of which came from public sources. Deployment has been slow, raising the need for catalytic and bridge funding. Panelists Trish Maxson and Yishai Lerner of JLL, Caroline Bressan of Open Road, and Kim DeAllen of Walking Softer shared valuable insight on how to get capital go further faster - from 0% interest catalytic loans, short term bridge financing, to nature immersive experiences that unlock funder-founder collaboration. They emphasized not every startup fits the venture model, and founders should engage the entire impact ecosystem to explore capitalization options. I was especially energized to meet JLL's portfolio founders - ?? Kate Murphy, PhD of Aquarry - harnessing abundant mine pit lakes for durable carbon removal with environmental cobenefits. Each mine pit lake has multi-megaton carbon sequestration potential at an affordable long-term cost of $70/ton. ??? Armelle Coutant of Kit Switch - revolutionizing affordable housing construction with ready-to-install modular kitchens and baths that cut cost and carbon emissions by 20-30%, ensuring equitable housing access for all communities. ?? Sarah Williams, PhD of Minus Materials - producing carbon-negative, quarried-grade limestone from algae at a fraction of the cost to be used as a sustainable input for cement production and consumer goods (e.g., toothpaste and supplements).
