May 1st was college decision day and the anchor to a new journey for many high school students. It also shifts the focus to preparing for more independence, which can be exciting and overwhelming all at the same time for both students and their parents. We created a program for children in this age group based on parent demand called Sensory Strategies for Teens to Adults to help students maximize function and independence PRIOR to leaving for the college campus-whether moving away or staying at home local. Starting the program now is ideal for rising post-secondary freshman so they are prepared for fall schooling. We also offer fading support during the fall semester transition as necessary. See our website at https://lnkd.in/eXWicxBs for more details or contact me for more information!

Did you know Good Beginnings has a youTube channel? Probably not, because we are still working out how to use it ?? But one of the best things we've ever done is have my friend Declan make a series of videos to show how kids with all abilities can learn to use a balance bike. Go to the free series on youTube to check it out and help anyone you know learn to ride!

Spring is here and it's time to get kids on their bikes! We frequently field the question "What is the best way to teach my child how to ride a bike"? While each child has an individual learning style, we have consistently found the best results by using a balance bike (without pedals). We plan to dive into this a bit deeper as spring continues but wanted to share our favorite resource for immediate help. Please see the step-by-step videos created a few years ago by our friend Declan showing how kids of all abilities can learn to use a balance bike. We think his joy upon mastering the skill is pretty obvious when you watch them! ?? ?? https://lnkd.in/ewYp8mSY

Are you or do you know the parents of a baby between birth and six months old? And did you know we have a FREE group to support you (or them) through learning the early motor milestones? Join us on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at The Toy Nest in Falls Church for "Tummy Time Together", where we demystify the challenge of teaching babies to love tummy time and thrive with their gross motor skills. See the flier below and share far and wide!

Thank you to one of our favorite providers, Robyn Brickel for sharing this insightful and helpful article with tangible solutions! I think all of our parents can relate to this is some way. It really helps put things in perspective for those of us who remember the card catalog and before remote controls ??

The research by Johnathan Haidt, sharing about the impact of smartphones on the mental health of Generation Z, focusing on the profound consequences on adolescents can be found in this Guardian article. It discusses the rapid increase in anxiety, depression, and self-harm among young people, particularly within gen Z, attributing much of this escalation to the rise of smartphones and social media platforms. The piece highlights the detrimental effects that constant exposure to social media has had on teens, especially girls, with issues such as social comparison, anxiety, and depression becoming more prevalent. Moreover, it emphasizes the significant mental health challenges faced by adolescents, drawing attention to the dangers of excessive screen time and the addictive nature of digital platforms. The article also proposes solutions to combat this crisis, including delaying smartphone and social media usage for children, promoting phone-free schools, and advocating for more unsupervised play and childhood independence as essential elements for healthy development.
